Hi ya’ll, just thought I would do my own little survey and see how many of you. .................A: Make your own Hooks and Bags (possibly Tongs). .............B: Have someone make them for you. ................. C: Buy them from a Dealer. .................... D: Other ......................In my case, I construct my own Hooks and Bags. As for making a set of Tongs, I really have not figured a good way to do it yet. So, I just stick with my trusty 52" M 1 Tongs from Midwest. .................... Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I make my own hooks. Actually, I've only made one (from a golf club that some angry/drunk golfer hurled into the pool). I made it well enough that it has lasted me for about eight years now. I also have midwest tongs (Gentle Giant) and bagging system that I enjoy thoroughly. I used to have a bagging system that I made out of a large pillowcase and a tennis raquet. It worked well enough for relatively docile rat snakes, but aggressive or high strung snakes were farily likely to land a bite on my bagging hand. When I moved up to hots, I got the Midwest system.

I also use a Tennis Racket to make my Bagging Systems. I extend the Handle to make it long enough to cut down on the possibility of a Bite. I also construct my own Bags. I make my Hooks from old Golf Clubs too, I use J.B. Weld to secure the Hook to the end “it works very well”. At one time I had thought about making them to sale, but I think most people would rather buy from a Reputable company. ................Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I've been making my own hooks, bags, pinners, and trapboxes sice I started. The only thing that i've broken down and bought are a pair of midwest tongs.

I buy my hooks and tongs from Dana at Midwest. I make my own snake bags out of light/thin material. I double stitch them and sew corners in them for handling hots inside. I have some cool ones that have prints of hot peppers on them. These are my "HOT" bags. Everyone who hunts with me knows they have something venomous in them just by the pattern on the bags. It is a safe way to ID the captures in the field.
ALL my hooks and tongs were well worth the money paid as some I have had for years. I have a heavy hook made by David Barkers father. This hook is indestructable. I keep it in my hot room at all times.

My favorite snake hook is one I made back in 1972. It is sort of a combination field hook / cage hook, and I have used it every day for the last 34 years. I have used it hunting all over the U.S.
I also have purchased several Stump Rippers from Furmont over the years, and use them for flipping heavy boards and tin, and rolling rocks and logs, and working with large venomous snakes as a cage hook.
I really do not care much for the conventional shaped, commercial type snake hooks, so do not own any of those.
I do own a couple of small cage hooks, one from Furmont, and one home-made collapsable one made from a radio antenna, that I use for small venomous snakes.
I sew my own snake bags from muslin cloth, but I also purchase snake bags from time to time.
I had a pair of Pilstrum Tongs that I used for about 31 years, but I sent them to Alex in Romania last year, and he is now using them with his collection.
I keep a short pair of tongs for removing water bowls from snake cages.
I have built bagging systems from tennis rackets and net hoops in the past, but find them to be more trouble than they are worth most of the time.
Best Regards JohnZ
