A recent posting on this forum led me to a web site on which a producer of venomiods states that the feeding of frozen/thawed rodents is proof that snakes don’t need to envenomate their prey as an aid to digestion. At face value the validity of this “proof” is absurd, but it does raise the question as to whether or not hots envenomate while swallowing f/t rodents.
While I no longer keep venomous, I’ve had many vipers and elapids in the past. I frequently observed them sinking their fangs as they swallowed their f/t meals. My assumption was that as they did so the venom was flowing. However, I have no way of corroborating that assumption. If they don’t envenomate while swallowing it would fly in the face of the conventional wisdom that venom is also an essential digestive enzyme.
Wadaya think?

I would be willing to bet they do, as for having proof, I have no idea. It would stand to reason that a Venomous Snake (especially Vipers) would need to inject their Pray to complete Digestion. Now, as for Elapids, I have no earthly idea. In any case, I would venture to say that Venomous Snakes do Inject F/T Mice wile Swallowing. I still wonder if anyone in the Venomous Community has ever done Research on this Subject. ...............Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

Now that would give a new meaning to Donating you Body to Science, but I think I will pass on that one “LOL”. I still wonder if anyone has tried feeding a Venomous Snake, then remove the Mouse before it is totally Swallowed. I would think by drawing the Blood into a Syringe and examining the Blood Toxin Level, you could see if the Snake actually Injects its Pray, either wile Swallowing, or when it Bites the Pray. Just a thought, being I do not have the proper Tools or Resources to do such a Complicated Exam. .............Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

If envenomation does occur it's not very efficient. If the prey is dead there wouldn't be any dispersal through the circulatory and lymphatic systems. The digestive enzymes would remain pooled at the site of injection. The snake would have to introduce many small innoculations to maximize the effect. If it does occur, there may be a method to the madness.

I see what you mean Paul. It would make sense for the Snake to Inject Small amounts of Venom into different area’s wile Swallowing, in this way the Snake would be sure to Break Down the Flesh of its Pray thoroughly. In any case I still wish I had a way to see if Venomous Snakes actually Inject their Food “F/T Mice to be exact” either when Bitten, or when Swallowing. It would be fascinating to know if the Snake actually knows weather or not the Pray item is Alive or Dead, and being so, weather it would rather save its Toxins for defense, or something like that. Just wish I had the Tools to Test this Theory. ....................Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally
