My Bitis caudalis (CBB04) was very hungry today. When I introduced the FT mouse she started "Caudal Luring" which she only does ocassionally. I stopped, withdrew the mouse and positioned my video camera to watch the action...Click the link below to see video. I apologize ahead of time, she is just too fast at this angle to see anything but a blur go by, even at 20% normal speed!
Cheers!

AL, what is amazing about the video is how fast the actual luring is going on ! Compared to our natives like Cottonmouths, which do the lazy luring thing, it is quite different.
I wish I had a video this afternoon, as I put a ribbon snake in with my big female Coral for food. The Coral was doing her usual elevated head, stalking thing, and it did attract the ribbon over to investigate. Unfortunatly, she did not eat the ribbon. I now have a good photo of the ribbon laying on top of the Coral`s back, LOL ! Durn these Corals, they are so picky about feeding !

John:
Corals are just plain difficult! Very few can keep them going for very long. Try skinks!
She does not lure often but when she does, she really goes at it with gusto!
Thanks Plainblain :-) If you or anyone else like to see my critters go to http://www.youtube.com/ and search for "Viperkeeper"
Cheers!

AL, yep Corals can be challenging. In the past I have kept several that lived for 5 to 7 years, but they would eat almost any kind of snake or lizard, and even pink mice. Those are the ones that I bred back in 1975. What was a real challenge was finding food for the five young that I hatched ! They are so tiny at birth, about the same diameter as a wooden kitchen match, and about twice as long. They did eat tiny snakes, and lizards, and even centapedes !
This new pair of Corals so far have eaten only Northern Brown and Earth Snakes ! They will not eat Ratsnakes, Garter Snakes, Ribbon Snakes, Racers, Frogs, Tadpoles, Toads, Skinks, Anoles, Fense Lizards.........
I am begenning to think they must have grown up eating something really wierd like sirens, or Pygmy Rattlesnakes, or Scarlett Kings, LOL !
So if anybody finds any extra Storeria, please give me a call. I am willing to drive quite a ways to pick them up.
Best Regards JohnZ

The Micrurus are indeed finicky about what they want. They tend to eat only the fossorial snakes...i.e. the smooth-scaled with diminished scutes. Must slide down the ole coral gullet easier eh? Blind snakes, flat-heads, earth, and the like are the cheesecake of the coral menu. If you look at the skink's build-up, they kind of fit that bill too.
I keep threatening my herp department that I'm going to clear out an entire wall and devote it to 100s of Micrurus of countless species. These are among my favorite snakes, along with the underdog cottonmouth....go figure.

Doug, setting up an entire wall of Micrurus would be excellent !
Of course, you would have to hire a keeper whose only job would be to road cruise in a City truck, on City Gas, for weeks at a time, just to collect enough feeders for them.
Gosh, he would probably have to spend weeks in West Texas road cruising and field collecting, just to be able to collect enough feeder snakes and lizards to keep the collection fed !
It might be tough to find someone who would be willing to get paid to road cruise and field collect all the time, LOL !
Best Regards JohnZ

LOL John! You mean, I need to hire someone to do MY job, while "I" road cruise all night long. Isn't that what you mean? Or were you positioning yourself for a job here? LOL
