Last night my large female Coral Snake shed her skin, and deposited two eggs in the damp sphagnum moss that is in a bowl in her cage. She is staying in the moss, so I think more eggs might be on the way.
What is interesting about this is that it has been 162 days since the male and female last bred ( March 24 ).
I could feel 10 or 12 un-calcified eggs a couple of months ago, when I let her glide accross my fingers, and could see a shift of weight toward the tail area.
The heavy area seemed to shrink after a couple of months, and it looked like she had re-absorbed the eggs before they calcified, and was not going to produce any eggs this year. I thought ``oh well, there is always next year,`` as there is no way she will lay eggs this late in the year. Well, she proved me wrong.
This is way different from the first time I bred Coral Snakes in captivity, as then the eggs were deposited 57 days after breeding the first time.
The two eggs produced last night are 0.2 OZ in weight, ( 0.5 grams ), and are 2 inches long ( 4.75 mm ), and 1/2 inch wide ( 1.8 mm ). About one third larger than the last batch of Coral Snake eggs, but this female Coral is much, much larger.
I am setting up the eggs in Vermiculite wetted with distilled water, and hopefully, they will hatch. If they do, it is going to be kind of difficult to find food items for them in November or December.
New born Coral Snakes are difficult to feed and raise even when food resources are abundant. They are born about 7 inches long, but are only about the diameter of a wooden match ! Should be an interesting challange.
Best Regards JohnZ

John,
That is great news. You have already astounded me with being able to keep corals in captivity for so long. Then it was with breeding them and now again! Keep up the great work.

8:17 p.m. One more Coral Snake egg deposited in the peat. This one is 1/3 longer than the first two, and more ``plump.``
You can clearly see the developing baby snake by ``candeling`` the egg with a LED flashlight.
Female is still hanging out in the damp sphagnam, so maybee more eggs later tonight.

John, this is GREAT news! I know you will be successful at hatching and rearing the little Corals, heck, you have done it before! I hope to emulate your success some day.
Best regards,

Fantastic news John! Eastern Corals are real tough to keep alive, no less breed. Holy Cow! The babies will be real fun to feed. Best of Luck!!
