Today I was walking to get more photos for my
website R.A.C.E. . And coming out of the briers was this black racer. Well , I watched this snake crawl by
and disapear in the woods, and right behind him, out came this neonate EDB rattlesnake. I noticed something
wasn't right- it seemed to be lethergic . So I pinned
and captured him. I examined the snake closely to see what was going on - the poor thing had one eye out and a little hole on him covered with maggots.
Now I wonder if that racer try to eat him ?.
I'll try to put a couple of pics on the photo album.

This is just a guess but... it takes maggots 24 hours to hatch and up to 5 days to pupate. I'd be willing to bet the wound was more than one day old but less than five depending on conditions.

Hey,
I did a little digging and found this page http://www.bio.bris.ac.uk/research/insects/myiasis.html
I also found several treatments mentioned including a 15% solution of chloroform in vegetable oil, using petroleum jelly to cut off the supply of air and forcing maggots to the surface and manually removing them, and ivermectin. (ivermectin is dangerous if misused.) I have no idea if any of these would work, so for medicolegal reasons *** see a vet before trying any of this***
The one time I've seen this in a wild snake I wasn't in a position to bring it home, so I left it as I found it.
hope this helps,
Chad

It is not likely the racer caused the injuries you described.
Probably some other predator, if it removed an eye and punched a hole in the EDB.
Try what Chad said as far as medicating the wounds.
Hopefully, the snake will recover.

Well , I decided to release the little guy and let nature take its course. He was very week when I found him. I gently placed him under some briars next to where he was found . Maybe it will recover .Now I'm after mom and dad if I can find them .This place has a lot of cover.
