hi
i recently read that there are eastern softshell turtles in the northeast (specifically NJ). i was wondering if anyone has every seen a softshell in NJ, or any other New England states for that matter. if you have seen one, where and when? i have lived in NJ all my life and herped hundreds of ponds and lakes but never seen a softshell turtle anywhere besides the southern states. just curious. thanks!

i live in pennsylvania and have recently found baby softshells. Before the first cold frost here, to be exact. I dont think this will help, but i found them wondering around a little pond. I dont think that they are alive now, because they looked like they were going in circles, almost like they were lost.
I wish i would have picked up one or two.
Hope this helps.

According to Conant, Trionyx s. spiniferus has an introduced & well established population in the Maurice River system of southern New Jersey. One reason you may not be seeing them in ponds is that except for T. ferox, the genus in North America is, to a large degree, an inhabitant of river systems.
