There is a wanted ad asking for another gaboon viper that was posted by a member who is 17. PLEASE do not sell to him. I know somebody is going to get offended by this, and I don’t care. I realize that this particular keeper is probably more responsible than many other keepers myself and many of you have surely encountered, but there are some major differences between and irresponsible adult and a responsible? teenager. When you are 17 you are at home with mom and dad. You are in THEIR house, on THEIR insurance, and on THEIR dime. In the event that you get bit, what do you think the media will say about your parents who let their 17 year old KID keep potentially deadly animals in their home? Do you think their insurance will continue to cover them (and you)? I realize at your age you know everything and no one can tell you anything, but you are wrong. You have no idea of the consequences that real life can present to you. In a few years after college, you will agree with me when I say that you are wrong to keep venomous at home with your parents and possibly siblings. And speaking of college, where are your animals going to go? Are your parents going to take them? I am just asking everyone who is under 18 and/or still living at home to THINK. This hobby is not a joke. Please, for the sake of the animals and the hobby, practice restraint until you are ready to keep these creatures.

If its okay with his parents then what business is it of yours? You are not his parent, right? So you are being a busybody interfering with their parenting? And making a worldwide public spectacle of it rather than doing it privately? Why aren't you talking to his parents about it if you are so concerned? I would suspect that you already know its okay with them. I suspect that legally the snakes are owned by his parents anyway, whether he pays for them or not, until he is 18 because he is legally an "Infant" until then.

gaboons are one of the most underrated snakes when it comes to danger. Andrew and i had a conversation this weekend about gaboons, and how people think they are so easy to keep...
i beleive it was phobos who had a link to his gaboon almost doing a backwards flip! i don't think 17 year olds should have gaboons, but there could be exceptions. i will agree with rabbits- the first post i this series was a little excessive.
please be careful if you get a gaboon! we don't need anymore bad publicity!

Why does he have to tail a neonate WA Gaboon, that he is pictured with in his profile? There is absolutely no reason at all to tail that snake. What is the justification for doing that, just to have a good picture with it?

I dont think its as much of an issue of him keeping venomous snakes as instead of which venomous snake he is keeping.
Though a 17 yr old keeping venomous snakes already sounds an alert into most of our minds, if he has promission form his parents and they except the risk and responsibilities that come with it then I have no qualls with that. If he keeping illegaly then thatsd a big no no.
Aside from that my main gripe is that he has a gaboon. Not even taking into account the acrobatics that gaboons can perform your talking about an exotic, potentialy leathal snakes which I would be willing to bet he dosent have AV for nor a source to obtain AV save from a local zoo. I have no problem with young enthusist keeping copperheads and such IF they have a legal gaurdian approve and they are indeed mature enough for the endevour but you shouldnt have exotic snakes durning your introduction into venomous. Im sorry but that is irresponsible and only makes the argument of how responsible the kid is losse validity.
Gaboons are bad first hots because they justr sit there. 99 percent of the time they just sit there. This breeds complancey which can easily lead to a bite. In the case of a gaboon bite that could be the last thing you ever do.
Sure copperheads just sit there but you have a good chance of being able to learn from your mistake if mistakes were made. Gaboons are much less forgiving and are able to lunge further then copperheads. Its just a bad call to start with a gabby no matter how you look at it.
Since ive started volunteering at the National Zoo I can tell you first hand what how the keepers feel about handing out their AV to people who keep thses snakes without proper protocall. Most of them dispise private keepers for this simple fact and this fact alone. To tell you the truth they dont even have to give it to you incase of a bite! They still reserve the right to deny you. With that being said keeping exotic hots and relying on Zoos for AV isnt a sure way to save your life. You should never put your life into another hands like that. Never!
I say all of that because I am almost positive that this 17 yr old does not have acsess to AV.
Anyway, its not the age so much as the protocall. Lets put it bluntly, a 17 yr old can not obtain AV on their own. Save for Florida noone can obtain AV without permiting it and getting a permit just isnt going to happen when your 17.
Anyways, my 2 cents for what its worth.

Lucky you are not my paretn. You have no right saying what i can keep and what i cant. You also have no right to tell people not to sell to me, if my mom says its ok then its fine. My dad would love to have them also but he died 3 years ago. He would support me aslo. Im not stupid either, i no i CAN have the herps i have were i live. And if you wanted to start up something like this y didnt you talk to me personal, instead of jumping to all the bs like you did. Rabbitsmcgates is right. on that. You dont have to be a dick about it either. Also like 6 months makes me an adult and now im an infant... and i am a resopnsible teenager, you dont no me for one, and if i wasnt responsable, i wouldnt have my drivers licesne, i wouldnt own venomous snakes, or even any snakes at all. i had to work my way up to this. Im not one of those kids that buys snakes to be cool or show off. I dont care if anyone thinks im cool, this is what i love is reptiles. Many of my friends dont like them, im not trying to impress anyone, just fullfilling my dreams by working with reptiles.
''I realize at your age you know everything and no one can tell you anything, but you are wrong.'' When the hell did i say that. Just becasue alot of teens are like that, doesnt mean i am. Like i said you dont no me YOUR WRONG. and i do know the consequences that "real life" can present me. When i go to college my snakes dont need to go anywere. There alot of colleges and differant possibilities for college. (again in my personal business) Also im not wrong keeping my snakes in my moms house. The room is practically a cage of itself. nothing is getting out of the room IF it escapes from the cage. I have my cages fully locked. I no alot of you people are just worried that me or other younger herpers, are going to ruin you guys. But us youngins are the future of herping.
As far as tailing the gaboon, i knew the risks, and i had my eyes on the snake at all times. I no gaboons are fast and can come over there own body (especially the smaller ones). But it was one time, for the photo and i was cleaning her cage, so i took the oppertunity to have my friend snap a quick pick.
As far as AV im realy checking into it more, ect... But as far as this post you SHOULD have came to me instead of saying some things. I learned to ignore things about my other posted questions, but this i couldnt. Because it was about mainly ME. There are alot of people that deal with venomous snakes around were i live. Some of you may argue that, but if you dont no them or no of them doesnt mean that there not here. I know some. As far as being 17, o well i guess ill be 18 soon and you guys can stop bitching about this stuff and about me. My pair of white lips are doing good. My popes is doing good, my western massasuaga rattlesnake is doing fine, and my GABOON is doing wonderful. And i didnt get this as a beginnger snake either. Ive had some before this so PEACE...

God Almighty. I am so damn tired of hearing certain people over and over again preach about under age keepers. Every single one of us older people were once underage keepers also. At what point is this bitch session going to stop?
This young man is going to keep venomous if he wants to. Unless you pay child support or tuck him into bed at night, you have no right to tell everyone on this site what to do. Suggestions - okay, orders - no.
Each one of us is responsible for our own actions and decisions. If we make a mistake that is fatal, it is our fault.
There are better things we should be discussing here than how old we can be before we catch a venomous snake.
By the way, mine was at 11. Now I'm 36.

Thank you Paul someone understands. This site honestly isnt for bitching like he said. Just mind your own business, DONT tell people what they can or cant do. And honestly some of the older herpers need to grow up. He has a point you all were young and im sure you lucky didnt do everything perfect, and thought you were the best. So get your head out of your ass, sorry but its true.
Thanks
MIke
