I'm looking for a job at the jax zoo or the museum of science and history, both of them have fantastic reptile exhibits, do you think that they will hire me or deny me due to my age, i realize that insurance is an issue but there are no hots that i would work with of course because i do not have the license yet. I feel that this would be a great way to work with what i love and make a little extra money too.
all responses are greatly appreciated
best regards,

It's always nice to see a 15 year old with a lot of ambition and drive; that will take you far in life. Don't be surprised if you get turned down only because there are oftentimes age minimums for paid jobs (even volunteer opportunities). At my facility, you have to be at least 16 and completed your sophomore year of high school before applying for a job. Volunteers have to be at least 15. It wouldn't hurt to see what they have available and start making a name for yourself.

The best way to get started is by Volunteering. As was said, some places have requirments so take that into account and dont get dis heartend if somone says no at first.
As the curator at the National Zoo told me, Volunteering isnt going to get you a job. You have such a small chance of making enough impact to get hired that it isnt worth mentioning. However, were it does become extreamly benifical is after you have spent a yr or two in collage going for a animal science degree and then you have the paper qualification to get the job. If you have that AZA knowledage to back you up then your already ahead of anyone else just out of school.
Its also important to make an impression. People will help you to your goals if you leave a good impact on them. If you show extream interest, smarts and skill then they will say "Hey, I would love to have bobby work here one day". That may be all you need to get your dream job once you have become qualified to do so.
Volunteering isnt going to give you venomous snake handleing know how first hand. You will however get to see how its done and more importantly learn all of the aspects of the zoo's day to day routine. Many keepers dont just tend to the venomous snakes or even snakes only. You usualy have to care for all of the collectin inculdeing the torts, frogs, lizards etc.
Just keep hitting the books, asking questions and continue with your goals in mind. You will come out on top if you put the effort into it.
Best of luck on your endevor. Ask away if you have any questions we can help you with.

Thats a great goal to set for yourself. Although you might be turned down dont get discouraged, you can always try again or even some other place. Im 18 and a frosh in college goin for a degree in zoology. I would also even eventually like to go work for some zoo or museum. With a background containing voulinteer work you will be that many times more likly to be considered for one of thoes jobs. Im currently at a community college to save money however would like to transfer somewhere a little warmer, and to a school with a reputable backgroun in zoology. All Im trying to say here is just stick to it, and good luck.

Thanks guys, I am already volunteering there and have been for a year, I was the one that they threw into thier alligator snapping turtle tank to bring him out for a check up and I am friends with many of the emploies so I think that this will improve my chances. Thank you all again for the encouraging words. I hope to continue in the field of herpetology and get a PHd in zoology at the University of Florida. If you know of a better college for this anywhere in the US please let me know.
