sorry for the double post but in todays florida times union paper, i read an article encouraging people to get snakes and other exotics as pets saying that they require little care and minimal responsibility, this truly angered me as florida is getting ready to make some extremly harsh changes that will all but eliminate the purchasing and owning of exotic snakes such as pythons etc.. having a bunch of blithering idiots going out and buying a cute baby burm could be devestating to our efforts to prevent the changes. I am tempted to write to them expressing this p.o.v.

Chris, I agree with you. Large exotic pythons are not great pets. The pet industry has single handed brought forth the mess we are going through now. If a Burmese at the Flea Market cost $25.00 a inexperienced owner may not hesitate to release it. Spend $200.00 for a exotic Burmese morph, and the chance drops entirley.
There are several reptiles that just do not make good "pets", yet we see them all the time in Pet Stores. Iguanas, monitors, Burms and Retics. I just saw a Retic here in Ocala at a shop that was labeled "not friendly - reduced price". I was pissed. What will happen to this snake when it reaches 9-12 foot and decides to become defiant with it's lucky owner. Point being, how many keepers buy their snakes at a pet store with all the shows we have now?
The newspaper ad is not a great ad to be running.

I agree 100%. I find it rediculous that someone with little or no experience in large snakes can go out and purchase a snake thats going to exceed the length of 12 or 14 ft without knowing its potential. These are the reasons why bans, and other laws are put into place; for irresponsible people who have no idea what they are getting themselves into. I recently went to the NARBC show in tinly park and saw a kid, mabey 15 or 16, make an impulse purchase on a retic for $95 beacuse of the ever so popular cool factor. I watched and thought to myself this is why laws are placed. People purchase animals without thinking about that animals potential size, cost, and care. I live in IL and the laws are not going in our favor, and if these trends continue, I fear harsh laws will be set into place that will ruin our hobby.
Thanks, Eric

How do you "feel" about someone with very little experience purchasing a Gaboon Viper (or some other deadly hot) and keeping it in a tuperware container in their bedroom?!

I am going to reference this page to the editor when I write them, not like it will do much good, the damage has already been done but they sure as hell will NOT make the same mistake twice! They should have asked an expert on each of the animals as opposed to a pet shop owner that is souly intrested in selling out!
