Hey guys. I have a quick question about cypress mulch. Is it better to freeze it or heat it? I use to freeze it for 48 hours for my monitors, and i was thinking about using it for 1 of my snakes. Just wondering if anyone here uses if often or anything. Thanks for the time

I used to freeze it to rid it of parasites then zap it in the microwave to both heat it back up and kill all remaining parasites, just be sure to mist the mulch and keep the time in the microwave under 10 secs, be careful when feeding your monitors, if some mulch is swallowed it will make the poor lizard sick or cause a nasty mouth infection due to its abrasivness and oils. I now use pete moss as it is easier to spot clean and it is cheaper and it does not harvest bacteria making it sterile and much safer.
good luck,
i have had a lot of breeding success with the mulch and it adds a great visual effect.

I froze it and used proventamite. But i also mixed it with jungel mix. good for humidity. Im working on breeding my green tree monitors. They should be ready to breed this year. So im going to try and push hard to do that. I typically feed them while they are in the trees (there in a tall cage). My female crocodile monitor i put her food in a big bowl and they never consume there bedding, thank god lol. Thanks

not about parasites but here's a cool thing you can do with it --
Mix 3/4 parts cypress, 1/4 parts aspen -- lay it down in a cage and sprinkle a few pine bark nuggets around, then dust it with a a couple of handfulls of oak leaves (brown dead ones) and it looks really really natural.
I have to credit Chris H. with this, he came up with it and it looks AWESOME in a cage with a piece or two of driftwood.

Repti bark gets too costly, go with the home depot stuff, it's the same thing in a different bag.

I like it because it grows in swamps and it has natural anti-mold properties. You can get it wet and it won't mold or mildew. If you get aspen wet you have a nasty mess.
