If one was to come accross a new species or morph of snake, what would the procedures be to go about documenting it?

I saw the proccedure once on Animal Planet. It is very involved and they said the documentation takes one year after the animal is found.
When a new creature is discovered by a real scientist, they kill it. That suprised me. But they do. Then they x-ray it and plot its' anatomy and visually go over it and note every aspect of what it is composed of and what it looks like. Then they disect it and examine all bone and tissue for things and examine DNA.
The scientist on the program was elated that he had found a new snake, but he knew the work that was in store for him for the next year and he wasn't so thrilled.

That is what we refer to as a voucher specimen. They are, unfortunately, a necessary part of the scientific process. Without them, there would be no way to verify the validity of a new species. Nobody really wants to destroy the animal.

Ohhh, that's odd as it would most likly be a highly endangered species but i suppose it is one of the only ways, i would keep it in captivity and learn it's behaviors and perhaps wait until it dies naturaly then go through the process. Wouldn't that be a better way?
