Bryan, many cobras have problems with incomplete shedding and stuck eye-caps if they are kept too dry.
However, they do not need the same kind of high humidity levels that tropical vipers need. I would suggest what I would call a ``medium`` humidity level, which might be provided by a large water bowl and a somewhat enclosed cage with occasional misting. When you see one of them go opaque before it sheds, you might wnat to mist the cage more often or provide a container of damp sphagnum moss that the snake can hide in and help keep himself hydrated enough to shed cleanly. Hope this helps Best Regards JohnZ

John hit it on the head. I typically keep my black pakis dry w/only moderate humidity levels (newspaper substrate, top opening hide area and a medium water bowl). During shed cycles, I mist the cage once a day w/warm water and let it just dry out over the course of a day...my cobras typically have complete sheds w/out any problems. A humidity box works well too.

Okay, thanks alot. I was just worried about eye caps. Now, I use the aspen bedding for all my snakes except the gaboons. I use the mulch substrate with wonderful results.. Would the mulch substrate be okay to use on cobras or will that cause too much humidity?? Thanks alot. Bryan

I personally just stick to newspaper. However, I know many keepers who use cypress mulch with no ill effects.
