Hi guys,
Over the past years I have met my share of conservation enthuziasts who are fanaticly against keeping reptiles in captivity.
I was just wondering what arguments you would bring to back up our hobby ?
I`m looking forward to reading your posts,
Best regards,
Alex S.

Offer to drop them off in the woods, naked and empty-handed and pick them up a month later. Then they can tell you how "free" they felt on the way to the hospital.
Before anyone objects, I know several people (possibly including myself) who could survive this OK. None of them are PETA members though...

If NOBODY kept venomous snakes in captivity there would be no antivenin and the deathtoll worldwide would rise exponentially.
If NOBODY kept venomous snakes in captivity there would be no captopril for high blood pressure (sales from captopril totalled 7.8 billion in 2002)
If NOBODY kept venomous snakes cancer patients wouldn't have the possible future use of contortrostatin from copperhead venom.
If NOBODY kept venomous snakes nobody would have the antiplatelet drug Integrilin.
If NOBODY kept venomous snakes nobody would have the heart medication Aggrastat.
If NOBODY kept venomous snakes countless people who have been to lectures by members of this very society wouldn't know a venomous snake from a non-venomous snake and would have picked up or tried to kill a snake and got bit. Their likelyhood of living would have decreased because of the non-existence of antivenin.
If NOBODY kept venomous snakes nobody would be doing public education and everyone would just kill every snake they saw and rat populations would explode exposing you to terrible diseases.
If NOBODY kept venomous snakes my freezer would probably be full of real food instead of frozen rodents and I'd probably weigh 600 lbs and I'd be so bored I'd be posting nude pics of myself all over the internet. Do you really want to ban these animals?

Thanks.
I've said this before, but I'll say it again. If *anything* will save this hobby it is showing the value in our keeping the animals to the public. I take every opportunity to do removal calls for the local sheriff, police, dnr and animal control. The 911 operators here know they can depend on me to get the rattlesnake out of aunt sadie's doghouse or out from under cousin sarah's front porch. They don't have to worry about it. If the day comes that hots become illegal in my state I know I'll have the local authorities more than willing to hand me a permit.
If you don't already do it, take every opportunity you get to educate the public about snakes. It WILL pay off in the future both from a personal standpoint and an ecological standpoint. Yes you will run into some people who think you are a crackpot, but the one's who do listen are worth the effort.
