I know some of you are anti-aquarium, but here is something we used at the serpentarium that really worked well. I have never seen a snake escape from this...

I have seen another technique along the same lines. If you use a Critter Cage (a glass aquarium with an integral sliding screen top) you can file down the locking tabs on the front. With the tabs gone you can fit a Four Paws screen cover over the top and clip it down. The Four Paws will hold the integral sliding screen closed. This provides a double screen barrier with a surprizing amount of space between the screens. I have seen it work very well for smaller tanks (5-10 gallons) housing pygmies and small copperheads.
There are some problems, however. The glass on the Critter Cage is thinner than that of a comperable aquarium. You have to assume that the sagging screens for larger cages will reduce the intra-screen space at the center.
