Folks Sick After Columbia Show ???

It seems that a lot of the folks I have talked with who attended the Columbia Show came down with an upper respiritory infection / cold / sickness ?
What ever this illness is, it is difficult to recover from.
Could it be from the nasty hotel? Probably not, as not everyone who is sick stayed there, and there was not a central heating / air-conditioning system.
Could it be from the Chinese Buffet? Probably not, as not everyone ate there. Also, food borne illness usually does not cause respiritory problems.
Could it be from the food service at the show? Probably not, as not everyone ate there, and those that did ate many different items. Also, food borne illness usually does not cause respiritory problems.
Could it be in the air at the Jamil Temple? Very likely as everyone breathed the same air.
I am guessing that the heating / air-conditioning in that building stays turned off for a week or two at a time, and is turned on before a show. The water cooling systems on some units like that can be breeding grounds for mold, fungus, bacteria, viruses, etc. Anyone remember Legionairs Disease? When the systems are turned back on, they fill the air with spores or germs, etc.
I would strongly suggest that folks who ran the show contact the Health Department for the City of Columbia and have them check out the heating / cooling system in that building for dangerous airborne pathagins.
Other things that come to mind would be if there was a Bird Show at the Temple the previous week? Respiritory diseases are often associated with birds.
Or could there have been an individual ``typhoid marry``running around spreading germs everywhere?
Could there have been an intentional attack / contamination on the air system by the likes of PETA or ALF or muslum folks? Not likely, but who knows these days. Anyway, just some possibilitys to think about.
Just out of curiosity, how many other folks developed upper respirotory or other illness following the Columbia Show?
Best Regards JohnZ

Both me and my wife are fine. I have since talked to some of the people who attended the show and no one has made any mention of being ill. Hope it is nothing serious.

Sal, it is good to hear that you and your wife are fine. Will be interesting to see who all weighs in on the topic. So far, I know of 6 or 7 folks who seem to have caught it at the show, and who have had fairly severe respiritory problems for the last week. Whatever the bug is, it is not a lot of fun for those who have it.

John,
My wife, daughter, and I all got it. I figured it was due to the weather/climate change... At least that is what I attributed it to. I know two other friends that started getting the symptoms on Sunday morning just like my family did.

I had a mild problem that I began to notice friday nite when I was setting up. It was worse by saturday nite and sunday. I'm completely over it now. How many were affected?

We will see who else weighs in after they get home from the GA Expo this weekend.

Well, it is also flu season. Me and my wife both had a cold 2 weeks before the show.

This bug does not seem like a flu Sal. It comes on fast and settles in the upper lungs, causing a lot of mucus, horseness, and coughing. Does not seem to have the fever and nausia associated with influenza.
Thats why I am suspicious of molds and stuff in the AC.

John,
I have not had any problems myself but Bill became sick the other day. It's very interesting though. I am sorry some of the people including yourself bacame ill.
I hope everyone gets through it soon. John, the mold spores in the A/c system is something I know alot about. I am the Branch Manager of a large A/C company.
It's actually called Dirty Socks Syndrome and can only be corrected by changing the entire coil system out. It is a bacterial fungus growing in between the fins of the refrigerant coils.
Hope all get well soon.
