Well I just have to tell someone how amazed I am at just how many copperheads there are in my area of Missouri. I have heard of them being fairly rare to spot in other parts of the country. I have actually found the copperheads in my area to be more common(as far as being spotted in the open), than any other colubrid that we have. I find copperheads sprawled across the road literally 20 to 1 compared to any other species being found. This may have something to do with there not being many nocturnal colubrids in the area. I do most of my searching in the evening and night. I have roads in my area that I have high confidence of catching a copperhead or two, nightly, no problem. However wouldn't bet a dollar that I might find a non-venomous snake of any kind. By cruising roads through prime snake habitat at night, starting early this spring. I have found, about 5 dead by car colubrids, and only one live colubrid, that was recently hit by a car, that died in my car(speckled king). However, in the same amount of time, I have found probably 10 dead copperheads, and have relocated atleast about 20 live healthy copperheads, only one dying in my hands after being hit by another car. That is a 20 to 1 ratio I have had in my area, comparing venomous to non venomous. I am just curious if anyone else notices this much of an abundance of pit vipers in their area as compared to non-venomous. I know copperheads are the most common venomous snake, but this is just crazy! I believe that populations differ greatly from state to state, and even county to county. Interesting note that, most I find are no more than 24" long. Can anyone relate to this? Would be intersted in knowing. ------Anthony

I could only wish there was a big abundance of coppers in my area. I have looked all sring and summer and know of two, both dead being found. I live in WVA and the only thing I can find is Timbers, and I am about tired of picking them up. I would love to have more coppers around. They are my favorite little hot. I just like there looks I guess!

Well that's funny, because I wish we had more timbers around here. In fact even though I'm in the range, I don't think I have them in this area at all. I have never found one dead or alive. If I ever found one I would be so excited, I'd probably forget to stop the car before jumping out!

I'm from East Central Missouri. I have heard of timbers being pretty abundant in southern Missouri, in the ozarks. I have been meaning to make a trip down there, but I'm having car troubles right now. If you can give me any pointers on good places to find them, that would be great, however, I am almost convinced they are not in my county. I might just have to wait until I can make it to the ozarks.

I didnt see that you were from Missouri. I am from Wva and there are plenty of Timbers here. Westvaco has done several clearcuts here and I find the timbers in the ends of the clearcuts in the lod jams they pile up. I have also had good luck finding them in very rocky areas. Not much info, but I hope it helps. Let me know if I can do anything else for ya
