Hello Everyone
I'm looking for a little info and help to understand what I have already learned.
I keep 2 hots. First is a Naja kaouthia second is a Bitis gabonica.
From what I have read 1 Av will work for both snakes. Is this true? If so How much does it cost? How do I get the paper work to have it imported? What is the proper storage procedure?
I know even having you own AV is just part of the battle. The hospitals may not want to or refuse to administer it. I'm talking with my doctor about it as soon as I get the rest of the info I need.
I was looking for a previous post but all I found were questions about AV not how to aquire it. I also need to know the exact type I need. I know some of you are going to say I should know this already. I think its samir but Im not certian and could be completely wrong.
These topics are a little touchy and I almost hate to post but I'm getting more into the hobby and would like to it responsibly. I have read the down side of Av. Such as it won't keep forever, I may have an allergic reaction to it, Can be exspensive, finding a doctor that will admisister it to me, and that also knows the correct procedure to deal with a bite.
I'm growing and learning but I can't do it all on my own.
As for myself and and introduction since this is my first post on this site. I consider myself to be a good keeper and handler. I'm no expert by any means. I have never come close to having been bitten nor do I plan to. My technics are safe and well though out. None of my snakes are bought for novilty. I just wanted to put that out there.
I'm just tring to become a more responsible keeper for myself and the hobby.

Eric, it is good that you want to be a responsible keeper and acquire antivenin. As far as the SAIMR, it is appropriate for the Gaboon Viper and some African Cobras. It is not what would be used though for the bite of an Indian Cobra. Others here should be able to supply much more information to answer the rest of your question.
Best Regards JohnZ

I was doing some more reading after I posted and seen that the antivenin will not work for both. I guess I seen naja and took it at face value.
So What do I need for my Naja kaouthia. I did not see that anywhere. I will assume this means it's a little more costly. That is not a concern of mine really. I'm not rich but I keep the snakes. I feel I should also keep the antivenin as well. Starting to look like a package deal. I'm really not worried about getting tagged but accidents do happen. I would like to be as prepared as one could be.
Thanks for the welcome!

This was a lot to cut and paste. I hope that it is helpful to someone. I cannot keep cobras but through looking up answers for others have learned quite a bit about them.

Thank you that is great info. So the question remains. How do I get it into the country? Where do I get the paper work to start the process. How much does it cost?
There is so much to this. Is there anyone that has access or everything set up to import AV I could go through?
Well my heads pounding from all the research tonight. I'll be back tomorrow for more info and try to put all this together.
Thanks everyone.

I have recently just taken care of an naja Kaouthia envenomation The antivenom that works best for this snake include the Thai Red Cross Cobra antivenom and the Bharat Cobra antivenom for neurologic symptoms. To obtain these antivenoms you must import from the manufacturer and some are quite costly. Please feel free to contact me for further info.

Ok I Think I got it. I have more questions. I printed out Form 1571 and form 1572. I will have my PCP and myself fill these out asap.
Is there another form or forms these have to be sent in to apply for the BB-IND and the import permit? I downloaded the help file. I see it says I need the 1571 orginal and 2 copies and the 1572 orginal attached to the initial IND request.
How do I apply for the import permit?
I also noticed that all this is for maryland will I have to get different forms for PA?
Thanks for your help.

For the Gaboon SAIMR polyvalent, in most of the literature maximum 20 vials suggested, but not a great deal of literature from which to choose. One paper on a severe envenoming - http://www.smw.ch/docs/archive200x/2001/03/smw-06142.html. Note they also used fresh frozen plasma and surgical interventions (suggested practices or too little antivenom?).
For Naja Kaouthia - Thai Red Cross Cobra Antvenom is probably the preferable of the two as Bharat serums have been known to be somewhat pyrogenic.
Thai Red Cross produces several antivenoms - Cobra, King Cobra, Banded Krait, Malayan Pit Viper, Green Pit Viper and Russell's Viper, all equine derived.
