Have any of you guys ever seriously considered trying Artificial Insemination with reptiles? Considering the ability of the sperm to over-winter in the female, it seems that it would be rather resilient to survive a short in-vitro trip.
Females seem to ovulate whether or not they've been inseminated.
I've collected semen from bison, zebra and horses by a couple of methods, neither of which would work on an EDB (electrostimulation and an AV)
I'm just trying to figure out what the best collection method would be,...... any ideas?

Chad,
There was an article in the AZA magazine a couple of months ago where Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, had successfully hatched cornsnakes bred by A/I.
So it has been done and will work.
I'll see if I can find the issue and get you more details.

I know it sounds disgusting, but a professor of mine and I are considering doing a life history study (Agkistrodon) using sperm. He did a similar study on Chimney Swifts in Chernobyl. How did he collect specimens from his specimens? Physical stimulation. We are considering the same thing here. It's actually a pretty common technique in larger animals (high dollar horses that you don't want to risk hurting with electricity).
So is there anything we won't do for the persuit of knowledge?

That's a good question. If we could isolate the appropriate pheromone, they might 'pop' on their own. Have you ever noticed that males tend to become aware of females after a shed? Perhaps the pheromones are in the shed. The other possibility is to force the hemipenes out. I have seen this done before, but it was in the 'old days' before probing. I am also sure that it insn't pleasant for the snake.

Hey,
I have an idea that might just work, I'll be busy for the next week or so, but I'll shoot you an email when I try something.
