Thanks, and I offer the same to you and everyone else here.
But more importantly...what the heck is that in your profile photo??? Looks like you left a giant salamander in the back window of your car on a sunny day!

LOL...actually that is Andrias japonicus aka the Giant Japanese Salamander. To tell you the truth, they smell like they have been left in the back window of a car for about a week!

Cool. That was the first thing that came to mind, but I didn't remember the skin looking like that...
I didn't know anyone had any outside of Japan. Are they on a Panda-style loan agreement or is there a chance of seeing some for private owners? (I'm not a big amphibian guy, but I'd make an exception for one that could eat the neighbor's dog.)

Years ago, we had one each of Chinese and Japanese Giant Salamanders at the Atlanta Zoo. Don`t know if they have any there now, or not. They are kind of like a Hellbender on steriods, LOL. Very kool critters. Best Regards JohnZ

Sorry, I don't get in here that often. Thanks to all.
On the sally question-
There is a small number of the giant salamanders in the US. Thus far nobody has been successful in breeding them. San Antonio has 5 on site and had just completed a large "room sized" stream bank exhibit that simulates a wide variety of their habitat and micro habitats in the wild. Rock ledges, deep water, shallows, fast currents, dead water space, etc. It really is quite the set up. If anyone if going to breed them in, I can se Alan and his crew at San Antonio getting the task done for sure.

Cincinnati Zoo also has quite a collection, however I think they have more Chinese giants than Japanese.
I have a bunch of pics from a trip I took out there and will throw them up in one of the galleries when I find them.

Indeed they do. The big setup they have in the back (the old loading dock turned into a pond) is what gave Alan the concept for his new sally pool.
