This is really facinating, and kind of wierd. I was walking around the woods two days ago, it was finaly warm. I was near a stream and i saw a very massive copperhead trying to swollow a full grown doe!!! Very wierd, i sat and watched it try to swollow this thing. after about 30 minutes, he gave up. Either that or he got tired of me watching it eating...LOL
It was a strange, but facinating sight

hmmmm......, that is great that you saw a large copperhead, but maybe you meant to say it was swallowing something different. Not meaning to impose on your knowlege, but when you typed "doe" I think of a female deer. I am curious though as to what you saw, so maybe you can think of what it was now?
good find though,

I once saw a Cottonmouth that was trying to eat a road killed opossum. There is no way in the world it would have ever gotten close to swallowing the thing, but it still gave it a try. Makes you kind of wonder what the ability of snakes is to judge prey size, especially if they are hungry and attracted by an animals scent. Perhaps they focus on the nose area of a dead animal, which might seem small enough to them to be swallowable, and are not far-sighted enough to see the whole animal for what it is?
I also once found a box turtle that was eating a large dead bird, but I am fairly sure that the turtle did not hunt down the bird, LOL !
Too bad that you did not have a camera with you Nate, that would have been a very interesting photo.
Best Regards JohnZ

Cro,
MsTT told me two cotton stories at various times. One was of cottons trying to pry flat sun-baked frogs off of pavement. The other was that a coiled cotton snapped at a moth that was flying by and managed to catch and eat it.
Incidentally I've heard a similar story recently (in the past week!) about someone who watched a full grown crocodile chase down and eat a dragonfly. that must have been really neat to watch!

by the way, I checked weather.com for your area and it says the highs have been in the 40's. Must have been one chilly copperhead meal.... hmmmmmm

natedog- try to take a digital camera with you everytime you go out herpin - you could then record your observations and in this instance the snake's behavior (most digital cameras have a video mode). If that copper was doing what you are describing you could have writen a short article about it for Herpetological Review w/ the pics and video to back it up. Not to mention post it on the 'net for all of us to see!
Keep gettin out there!
