Hmmm, excellent information.
I wonder if that would work with Scarlet Kingsnakes?
I may soon be involved in displaying some.

Karl. The glass sheet technique just might work with Scarlet Kingsnakes, as they like hiding under things, just as Coral Snakes do. However, they seem to be a bit more alert, and more "Squirrely" than Coral Snakes, and I believe that their vision is also better. I have seen Scarlet Kingsnakes basking in the wild and as soon as I got within 45 feet of them, they darted under the bark they had been sitting on top of. Coral Snakes rarely react that quickly to approaching danger, but that might be a matter of confidence in their warning coloration and not an eyesight issue.
I am thinking that if you can see them, Scarlet Kings can see you, and would react quicker by trying to find somepace to hide, or by burrowing into the substrate, than a Coral Snake would. But if the substrate was something like news paper, then they would have no place to burrow.
Let us know what results you get if you try this technique with Scarlet Kings, Karl.
Best Regards JohnZ
