The original idea was....
After much thought and discussion,I have come up with a plan.I am a South African in California. After hearing all the horror stories you guys have of Africa (or what you have heard),I have decided to set the record straight.I am looking at doing a herping safari at the end of the year.September,October or November.I will charge nothing and all you will have to bring is pillow cases, film, spending money and sun screen.Due to the strong Dollar against the Rand (SA currency),everything is about 10 times cheaper there.A beer will cost you about 50 cents. The danger aspect is vastly over rated, and the areas that we will go to will be far away from the cities, where most of the crime is.I am still bouncing the idea around so any feed back from you guys will be greatly appreciated. If you dream about climbing from tree to tree chasing dendroaspis,or long to chase a 9 foot naja melanoleuca into a cane field in the dark...drop me an email...
Cheers
Donald
And the idea has worked out very well.I am heading back to South Africa soon to make all the final arrangements. All the info i confirmed on the south african snake safari web page.Look forward to seeing you guys there. http://donalds4.tripod.com/southafricansnakesafari

Well...first off it is $2000 all included. And I think that is only fair as it is what your ticket and spending money costs.I am making nothing out of this and am not taking any money. You pay for everything yourself, just like you would if you had to go herping in any other part of the world.I am going to be showing people around and letting them see some of the best herping country in the world. If you are not used to paying your own way, then you must still be a child and not used to the real world and would not be welcome. Thanks again

Hey, read your own topic heading...see the word free, we didnt put it there you did..And you must be the immature one to start throwing petty insults, so it already shows your character, it would be a shame to have someone like you on a such a wonderful herping trip to ruin it... I have been herping to several great countries, including costa rica in 1997 and have used legitimate guides not a wantabe that promises you the world only to slowly milk you for more..I would warn anyone considering taking this trip to use thier better judgement..something that starts out free and slowly becomes much much more, especially if your in a foreign country...could be a real disaster!!!!
But maybe this guy is for real and you'll have a great trip, but do your research first, for 2000-3000(and yes his website does say around 3000 near the end of the text)you can get a fantastic trip including a professional guide..think about it. This guy cant even keep his numbers straight, go to his website and see for yourselves...before he changes it again..

Ideally if everyone could be in Johannesburg on the 10 October,it gives you time to gather your thoughts before we set off.As far as I can gather tickets are between $1700 and $2000.So the whole trip wont be more than $3000 per person....all included.
I copied and pasted this from his website...doesnt he say up above in his post 2000.00 all included? Funny how the numbers change...by 1000.00

Well.I am really sorry that you have such issues with people offering things for free.I am going to be a guide for,and thats what the word free indicates.I came out to the USA and was blow away by the willingness of people to show me around purely for the fact that we have a common interest.I am offering the same.If you speak to any one that has met me or spoken to me you will definately change your views.I do this trip every year and have just offered people to join me.The reason that the price chaged, was because the price of the tickets were found by someone that is going at a cheaper price. If you read the begining of the website,it says update, indicating a change in status...hence the change in price.I wont be drawn into a fight with an anonymous person that does not have the faintest idea on what a general good natured offer is.I am not asking any money and never will.People are going to be using their own money as they see fit.If you had to go to SA and get a legitimate guide you would see all the sights, but not do what most herpers what to do...stop every ten minutes to flip rocks and so on.I offer you a the opportunity, call me and speak like a gentlema, not like this...I have nothing to hide

Thanks again

I normally try not to get into pissing contests, but Donald is a good guy and he is for real. He also has the cojones to use his name, email and phone number wheras you just post anonymously. I've herped with him, drank with him and spent enough time with him to vouch for his credibility. National Geographic, I believe, is offering a South African Safari for roughly $7000.00, which is what you could be paying for less than this experience.
Donald is good friends with the fellow who is the exclusive venom milker for SAVP. On this trip you will have a chance to watch him at work and learn from one of the true venom masters out there. Let's see National Geo do that. Donald knows all of the best herping spots in the 10-day trek that he has planned here. He has connections at a number of big game parks. At the very least, you'll get an excellent South African Safari--which happens to be what National Geo is charging $7000.00 for.
Don't criticize from the shadows. Step out into the light and show your face.
Cheers
Roger

Rodger,
I'm glad that you have a drinking buddy! good for you! and that certainly clears thing up completly!!!Herping and drinking even better!!! You should remove that metal probe the aliens installed in you, it may help you think better. And talking from the shadows keeps people like you from filling my email inbox with hate mail for expressing my opinion here. Men like you tend to think and talk with thier"little snake" instead of thier brains anyway.(think that over while you keep that bar stool warm and drink some more)
There is no comparision to a trip with national geographic and a bunch of guys going herping so I wont bother replying to that.
My issue with donalds post is his heading which seemed to confuse many people( just look at the original post and you'll see the responses)If donald wanted to advertise a free guide service thats what it should have said in the first place...not free trip to africa....He should have posted it more carefully if that was his intention and given a few references to the people that were interested( I wasnt one of them but I did see the people that were replying and they thought that some rich guy was taking a bunch of herpers to africa)
So to donald I offer an apology if you thought that I was impuning your character, I was however impuning your wording and math...you had people thinking the wrong thing was my point...when you hurled the first insult I responded...Give the guys interested better info and a few references(I'm sure your best buddy Rodger will be one for you...he has gone with you how many times?)
Anyhow, I wish you all the luck in the world on your trip...hope its all you promised
out from the shadows
Sierra

also I hope you took the time to expain to everyone who brings thier pillow cases what it takes to bring those same pillow cases back through customs when they are full.
And dont assume that because I have the "cajones"(as your best buddy put it) to express my concerns that I am one of you bar sloshing wantabes.

I appologise for getting defensive, but it just seemed like a kick in the teeth.I offer to take people herping and you start asking why I am not paying for airfares and accomodation.Out of the 30 plus responses I received, you seemed like the only person that misunderstood the wording. But once again,it might look misleading. So,the trip is not free, the airfair is not free, the accomodation is not free.It is going to cost you as much as it is going to cost me.I am offering 10 days of my time to show who ever will come around. That is all.And this was never meant to be a cat fight ,and I am sorry that happened. All the best
donald
