Would it be possible to keep broad bands and notherns in the same enclosure, and would they cross breed. Could you cross northerns and southerns?
Thanks

Yes, it would be possible to keep them together.
Yes, they would crossbreed. They do it quite frequently in the wild and have a very wide area of intergradation. Then you would have an intergrade Northern/Southern that everyone could argue over about whether it was a Northern or Southern. It would be MUCH more interesting to see someone taking the time to produce bona-fide Southerns OR Northerns but, of course, that is just my opinion.

buzztail,
First let me say thanks for your reply.I would be more interested in just breeding southernes. I was just curious. The main thing I was wondering was would the broad bands cross with the northerns?????
Again, Thanks

sure they would crossbreed. i have personally kept agkistrodon crosses such as
northernXsouthern
southernXtranspecos
broadbandXtranspecos
and seen many mixes besides them (with the exception to osage) so i believe all coppers capable of interbreeding. even cottons will cross with all three ssp, pending one isnt to much larger than the other, then your left with one. hope it helps,

As Jared said, all contotrix ssp can intergrade with one another and I have even seen Osage crossed with Broad bands before(WC Natural intergrades). However, when you get to mixing ssp which do not naturaly intergrade, such as contortrix/pictigaster I personaly think its takky. Then again though, I hate mixing anything, pirticulary sp which do not do so natrualy and on a reg basis in the wild. Just my opinion and im not trying to shuff it down anyones throat(well, maybe Jareds:-) LOL man!)
Also, one thing to consider. There is talk of elevateing A.c.pictagaster to its own sp status so mixing them with anything besides pure pictagaster may proove to be crossbreeding. I dont the current status of this situation so dont hold me too it if it has changed.
Welp, just my 2.2 cents.
All the best,
Jeremy
