i am trying to move toward breeding some rattlers next year and i need to sex them obviously....i have experience with bigger boids but i just held them down and eventually got it done....i guess the tubes are the most effective way(from what i have read) but i wanted to make sure before i bought them...i definitely need something...already have probes just need something for restraint....

I can attest to the effectiveness of restraining tubes. My brother and I just spent this past weekend sexing my coppers and timbers to determine where I stand for breeding next season. He held and I probed. Don't be misled, it is still a two person job. I would not have even attempted it without either one of them. The tubes I received from Midwest are the safest way to keep the snake visibly restrained and away from you. The set also comes in nine sizes convenient for what ever you have.

I agree with the other two gentlemen who just posted. You can find larger size tubes at Home Depot for about $2.00 for the 4' tube or $4.00 for the 8'tube. They sell them as fluorescent light covers in the lighting department. I use this size for many different venomous snakes. Also, you can find smaller diameter sizes at your local pet shop who deals in aquarium supplies. The Midwest tubes are a little to short for me, especially the larger diameter ones. Just my opinion!! Good Luck!!

Actually, the midwest set is missing a very important size...it's the one that's just right for baby cobras...
so there is another maker of tube sets that has a more complete set...I've seen them at shows (the sets) but don't know who makes them or otherwise where to purchase them.
That's good info about the additional sizes available at home depot.

necessary, not effective. that is what you should consider. i can and have "pinned" pitvipers, but i believe it should be avoided at all cost. chris or karl posted an article a while back about learning about independently mobile fangs. what they said is absolutely true. no matter how well you hold them, no matter how many times you have done it successfully, if they want you bad enough, they will eventually get a fang on you. bill haast should prove to be the perfect example. get the tubes, use them, and don't pin them and push their head in. corner them and make them make the first move to progress up the tube. some may disagree, but practicing pinning snakes, when not absolutely necessary, will eventually lead to a bite.

You can place the snake in a trash can with water. The snake wants to get out, and theres only one way out, that is up. When the snake climbs the wall of the can simply place the tube over etc.ect. etc.

i have heard of the can of water method...and as far as pinning them...it still makes my adrenaline start pumping every time i have done it....only times i have done it is to prevent some type of escape..to me its easier to tail and hook them...i dont plan on milking them either...not sure how good my insurance is...
