I have always heard that baby coppers are hotter than adults. Any truth to this? I dont see how as they can not deliver near the amount of venom as an adult can. Any info would be great. Thanks

That is often misunderstood. The juveniles are not necessarily hotter than adults, it is just that they lack the control that adults have over how much venom is injected. Where an average bite from an adult is roughly 25-75% of their capacity (see the venom chart on this site) a juvie may unload its full supply. Hope that answers your question.

Its also possible that juv have a more concentrated or potent venom...a study on Bothrops showed that juv have a much more potent venom drop for drop than did the adults..I'm not certain if this could carry over to agkistrodon or others...but its a possibility..I'm sure there is evidence either way if you looked hard enough..try this site http://ntri.tamuk.edu... and good luck..let us know what you find...

Well I know of a couple of theories on this subject. One theory that I tend to go by is the fact that because smaller snakes have smaller venom glands, and can't yield as much venom, their venom still has to do the job real quick, so it is more concentrated. Also the fact that they may indeed tend to inject more venom per bite, might contribute. I think in the end, it makes them evenly as dangerous, not more dangerous. This is just one opinion though. ----Anthony

Most smaller bothrops and agkistrodon would be carrying much more concentrated venom in smaller amounts, as was stated in prior posts a study of Jararacas and Urutus in SA revealed the venom complex also will change. This is also based on the fact that the prey items will change the older they get, thus moving from more nerotoxic juvies to more heamotoxic adults. So in fact, having a juvy grab a finger and unload all his venom can be much more dangerous (especially for that finger and hand) than a 25% envenomation by a larger adult animal. I hope i did a decent job suming up the prior posts LOL, later.
