I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with ingestion/impaction with cypress mulch or any other problems with it. I have always used newspaper for sanitary reasons and I would like to set up some more natural enclosures but bacteria, mold and the ingestion/impaction risks have made me nervous. I would appreciate any comments on any problems etc...Thanks
Shawn

I have used it and aspen for several years w/no problems. But recently several keepers have mentioned problems with impactions caused by cypr. mulch. Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences.

I work for Mark Bell of "Reptile Industries inc."
We use "Sani-chips" made by the Harlan company.
I have not heard of any problems regarding impaction or anything like that.
Good luck,
Darren

i no longer use cypress or aspen. i've never had a bad experience, but i have watched in horror as several of my temporary captives(check my profile) swallowed a piece with their recently deceased dinner. now i simply use newspaper substrate. just my opinion.

I was told that Dean Ripa has had several deaths including Bothrops and Lachesis due to inpaction from cypress mulch...I've also been told that there has been several other problems related to cypress...keep the comments comming but as for me the risk is too high, I dont think I will continue to use it...

I used to use cypress for my ball pythons, but i had a mite breakout that i think originated from it. I would say bake it first at 275-300 for like 20 mins. Be carefull not to burn down your house! I now use astro turf for all, no impaction worries. Keep some moist moss in there to drive up humidity and your set.

I use a cypress/aspen combo. Here's how I prepare it.
I spread shredded cypress mulch out on a sheet on a concrete driveway. It bakes in the midday sun until it is bone dry. [Sometimes it takes a couple of days to get dry enough.] We turn it occasionally to make sure that most of the moisture is allowed to evaporate. My wife and I then toss it around awhile and mix in a bag of aspen shavings. Tossing it gets out the dust and mixes in the aspen which tends to be a lot drier than cypress. I then pick through it and pull out the big chunks.
The finished substrate is kept in a large rubbermaid container/trash can with the lid on it - outside. The temperature inside the container gets pretty high during the day, and I've never had a mite problem.

I have had some minor problems with cypress but none with aspen. I now use aspen exclusively and all seem to do well.
