Chris, I really should not share this, but one of my favorite ways to find Coral Snakes was to turn very cold, very wet tin, in the very early mornings after night time rains.
By 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. they were usually no longer under the tin. I am talking about flipping cold tin at sun-up, like 5:30 or 6:00 a.m.

they love to crawl under cars in mall parking lots, i swear. wait until about midday and check under every car and then call it a day and try again tomorrow. that's your best bet.

Too long a story?
I have been to the campsite and seen 4 corals brought into camp.
One was by Chad.
One was by Chris.
One was by Dr. H.
And one was by The Boss.
Good Luck.
You're gonna need it.
Karl
PS - I'll be herping with The Boss ;-) KHB

Oh yeah, be sure to carry about 4 ACE Wraps with you if you are going to be handling corals. Be sure you know the pressure immobilization technique for elapid bites very well.

thanks to all, i am looking forward to this trip. from what i have gathered, sunup and sundown while road cruising or looking under tin is the best way to find them.
ps. Chris, i will be surrounded by experts while there. i will have the ace bandages just in case though.

In coastal NC SC I have seen them in the morning right around sun up in heavy pine thickets. Turnin straw cover logs and flippin straw can usually produce them in early morning, occasionally some people (if your looking for numbers) take leaf blowers, walk around the pine flats, and blow around the staw, youll see some then. Good luck, they are a favorite elapid of mine, maniacs on ground snakes.

Jared, if the morning sounds of cricketts, crickett frogs, pig frogs, barred owls, crows, song birds, and alligators in Applachacola are ruptured by the sound of a leaf blower, I am liable to shoot first and ask questions later !
Much as I love Coral Snakes, that might drive me over the edge, LOL !
An old fashioned leaf rake is much more quiet !
`Tis bad enough all the mexicans around here with there durn leaf blowers ! You ever notice that the lazy boogers never, ever, actually pick up leaves and grass clippings ? All they do is blow them somewhere else, most often on someone elses property or out into the streets !
Way past time for a large fense along the US borders !
Just my morning irreverent, politically incorrect rant and rave !
Best Regards JohnZ
