I believe the "Egyptian Asp" is one of the common names applied to the species Naja haje. This is also supposedly the snake that Cleopatra committed suicide with. Naja haje, more commonly called the Egyptian cobra, possesses a highly neurotoxic venom, as do most other cobras in the same genus. These are very large and fast snakes, and a friend has a banded phased male that's well over 7' in length. The biggest of these snakes can also be very strong, very comparable to the larger colubrids like indigos, cribos, and false water cobras. They can be incredibly aggressive as well, so if you're thinking of acquiring one of these, be sure you know exactly what it is that you're getting. This snake appears to come in a variety of colors, including a common goldish phase, an all black phase (saw that for the first time on Corwin the other day), and also a banded black and gold phase. There may be more out there, and if so, I'd appreciate it if someone would post them.
