Not in my opinion, however the asst. vp of the SHHS, Karl Betz disagrees with me. He has some plans that he has drawn up to make glass aquariums venomous ready.

Actually the answer to your question is not a simple one. I believe that all-glass aquariums can be adapted to be safe for keeping some smaller venomous snakes such as: Sistrurus, Agkistrodon, Aspidelaps, Atheris, Proatheris and probably many more. I would not recommend a simple screened lid - my cages have double-screened lids for personal safety. All that having been said, I would not recommend all-glass aquariums for mid-sized or large Diamondbacks (Eastern, Western or Red) or anything that can strike as hard as a Gaboon or Rhinocerous Viper. The glass of an aquarium is just not designed to survive the stress of a serious large snake strike. They are fine for my Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnakes, JUVENILE Canebrake Rattlesnakes, JUVENILE Cottonmouths, adult Copperheads and should I ever move to a state where they are legal to keep - Aspidelaps would do fine in an all-glass aquarium with a safely adapted locking lid. I have the plans for my locking lid system in word format and will respond to any polite emails asking for them. I do NOT warranty their safety for any particular animals but will say that they work well for me.

no, i don't believe they are. because of my situation and participation in the herp hobby, i never know what i will encounter. i currently have two, 4+ foot canebrakes in standard aquariums and it makes me uneasy, however, when you get to the nicer 55 gal aquariums, they have 1/4 inch thick glass. i think they would be safe for anything. securing the tops is another story. i think i will refer you to Karl on that issue. i still use the standard, store bought, single screen locking lids. i never keep my captives for very long and i live alone, so i don't put much (not enough) emphasis on it. WARNING, if you use this type of lid, never, I MEAN NEVER, place your hand on the top. NA pitvipers will stare, unconcerned, at you all day thru the glass, put your hand on top, you're asking for it. if you plan on keeping them, then, once again i refer you Karl. i have not personally seen his plans, but having a double screen lid will definately reduce or eliminate the problem of the random fang. hope this helps.

p.s. Karl, if you read this, J. Farmer, in S. Carolina makes his own lids with double screens. i would be interested in seeing yours, if you don't mind. i have recently been encountering more canebrakes than normal, i believe one i have is gravid. if i keep her, i would most certainly be interested in a better lid. you can reach me at wls967@bellsouth.net. thanks
