Fellow South Eastern Hot Herp Society members. I have something that I feel must bring to the table. Yes, it’s personal but it may be of some help to others. First I want to say that the meat of this subject is subject to controversy. Also it concerns an individual by the name of Jay Eaton of Exotic Jungle. If you are a loyal friend of this man please do not read and if you do chose to read don’t take it as a jab at his person. Also, I consulted a few people I regard as wise folks about posting here and I was told that if I kept it professional then I wouldn’t be meet with animosity. Thank you for reading and I hope I save someone some heartache.
Approx two weeks ago I contacted Jay of Exotic Jungle because he had timber rattlesnakes for sale. My wife said she would let me buy the female I needed as an early fathers day gift. I called him and I asked if the “timbers” he offered were indeed Crotalus horridus and not atricaudatus. (Here is the controversial part) knowing the current stance on horridus being one specie I explained to him that I wanted the mountainous version or what has been historically labeled as Crotalus horridus. I made it clear that I did not want a canebrake. No vertebral stripe, no pink, no steel blues. I even vividly described my male that I had plans to breed her to. I even used Linnaean terms so as to further prevent confusion. I thought I had been clear as glass.
The snake cost $75 with a $25 hotbox fee pretty standard stuff here. My wife paid him $90 and the $50 shipping would be paid when I picked the snake up at Hartsfield Jackson. She paid him on the 5th of June. He agreed to ship on the 7th of June. Jay told me he would call me and let me know when the snake would arrive and give me tracking info. He never called and I waited all day ruining plans I had for the eve. I called him numerous times to try and find out what was going on…..No answer all day. Finally I called one last time to tell him the deal was off. I left a voice mail telling him I no longer wanted the snake. Then 5 minutes later my phone rings. He gave me some excuse about how he didn’t have material for hot boxes so he couldn’t ship. I was upset that he didn’t inform sooner so that my day wasn’t ruined. I had to call him many times to get this excuse. I let it slide and decided to continue as planned this time we agreed upon Saturday.
Saturday came and I still had to call him to find out when I needed to pick up my snake. He said 1150 and so I went to pick up my animal.
Now I have always bought my hots face to face and so I was unaware that the box was going to arrive screwed shut. So I didn’t get to inspect my snake till I arrived home.
I unpacked with the anticipation and enthusiasm of a child at Christmas only to find out I received a canebrake! This snake is a salmon pink, farthest thing from a timber canebrake. I was very upset and felt cheated, and ignored as a customer.
I called Jay to express my unhappiness. He was rude and kept putting me on hold on the phone. His customer service was horrid unlike the snake I received. Or should I say no pun intended. He had the nerve to say that he would refund only my $75 if I paid another $50 in shipping! So now I am out $25 for a box and $100 in shipping just so he can turn around and give me $75! To add insult to injury he gets the snake back to resell and I can’t ship that snake legally because I am not a “known” shipper. So I run the risk of driving 1hr to the airport only to have the lady behind the counter say “Im sorry shuga I can’t do it for ya.” So now I am stuck with a snake I don’t want and cannot use! All I have requested from him is to either pay to ship it back to him (if I can legally) and refund my $75 or simply give me my $75 and eat the loss. As a business man he should strive for good customer service and he should strive to give the customer what they pay for. So far he has refused all of my requests for restitution. I understand that the snake he sent me could technically be called a timber but I felt only a smart ass would send me the complete opposite of what I asked. I made it clear or so I thought of what I wanted. He even verbally said “yes” it was what I wanted.
This, my friends is simply to inform you all of my bad experience and it is not a personal vendetta. Please, if you are good friends with Jay then I hope he treats you well. But if you have not or are planning to do business with him I am arming you with awareness. I will post updates and I will let everyone know if he does the right thing and fixes his mistake. I have lost for now. Be safe!

I too had a very bad experience with this individual. I made an order, was promised a prompt delivery, and I got the same run-around. I left a multitude of messages with no reply. I had to borrow another cell phone so he would not know it was me calling. Believe it or not, he answered the phone. I chewed on him a while and he finally agreed to refund my money only after a threat of a law suit and blasting him on this site and kingsnake.com. I feel for you. I will not ever do any business with that man or his company again. I suggest all do the same...unless you have a lot of money to throw away. I do take it personal when someone does not honor their word...it's disrespectful and unprofessional.

I too would like to give my opinion on jay Eaton and his businesses. The jungle Florida, the jungle south Florida, south of the border, and all of the other business names he jumps between once he ruins his name each time. This is my opinion, it is based on facts. Jay Eaton is not a man of his word, he is a crook. Do not under any circumstance let him owe you money. Do not believe anything he tells you. I don’t suggest to any of my fellow herpers to do business with this man. He recently made a large purchase which was allowed to have payment installments. No payment was received after months of excuses. Specimens (what was left in his store) had to be confiscated. They were in bad health and still continued to die. This was a very large transaction that took place on a handshake. Many animals were said to have died before being confiscated however no contact was made to advise there was a problem. I’m pretty sure they were sold by jay who profited. Jay is having his south of the border event next month and I would like to advise you to stay clear of this poor excuse of a man. I am biting my tongue today with information in the hopes that jay is going to step up to the plate and do the right thing. Until then I will continue to post information about jay, the sorry pos. This is my first post but there will be more for sure. I personally don’t want to go to SC but I may have to just to resolve this issue for my dear friend
