i plan on taking a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp next week. okefenokee.com is a site for a buisness that rents cabins right next the okefenokee wildlife refuge. i planned on renting one of these cabins for a few days and exploring the swamp. i was wondering if anyone has ever rented one of these cabins and what they thought of them. also what should i expect this time of year? im bringing my camera and hope to get some good shots of some gopher tortoises, are they out and about in early July? any info would be appriciated. thank you!

Bob, you should have a good time exploring the swamp, despite the resent fires.
The folks who rent the cabins are nice, and should treat you well. They should be a great source of information for your, considering that some areas of the swamp are not open at this time.
The swamp is an amazing place, and the fires are part of the natural events there that keep the swamp remaining a swamp.
In summer, the deer flys are bad during the day, and mosquitos are often out at night. Be sure to take along some repellent.
After you return, how about posting here what you thought of the swamp and your experiences there.
Best Regards JohnZ

Like John said bring plenty of insect repelant with at least 25% Deet. You could strip down and cover yourself with some rich pungent muck...LOL...if you feel like going native. The swamp in the summertime is beautiful but not exactly inviting unless your understanding of her is deep. It is definately alive!!! As far as herps go try the early AM or evening. there will be some activity in the water during the heat of the day. But the nite and transition times will be best.
good luck,
Andrew
