I have been plagued by baby rattlesnakes for the past 3 years-- every year about this time, we get 1 or 2 in the house. We have replaced doors, and caulked all over near the perimeter- but this morning, another snake. I have a few indoor cats and I worry about them getting into a tangle with the snakes when I am not around-- any ideas why my house is so appealing? Yard is barren on the side of the house that I find them. No pets or food outside, no food near that side of the house. I have no issues with having them in the yard, they have a right to be there- but I hate having them in the house... help!

One thing that comes to mind is that the house may have been built very close to a den. If that is the case, though, I would expect you would be seeing the youngsters a little earlier in the year.
Re-inspect the house for possible entry points. It does not take much, but could be as obvious as a pet door. I recently "remodeled" a guy's kitchen to remove a 3 foot racer that had obviously entered thru the doggy door between the kitchen & the screened in pool/patio area.
Plugging up any possible entry points for snakes will also reduce your cooling/heating costs, I would think.

Michelle,
A couple of things:
Where do you live?
A number of people on this site do free removals and might be able to help with ideas on how to make your property less appealing.
Unless you cats have been declawed, my money is on them to win against any US snake. I have seen house cats take on 4 foot long Canebrake Rattlesnakes and the snake barely got away.

Hi- thanks for the quick responses-- I live in Phoenix AZ. The house was built in 1984.
I actually removed a french door, because we thought the little guys were getting in around there- we put a window-- I am going to insert some self expanding foam into the space around there tonight- I bought 5 cans- yippee- maybe that is the issue..it is hard to know what works, until next year or the next snake shows up..
I am assuming that they arent that great in terms of vertical travel- maybe as high as they are long? That may narrow it down to that same area-- as there is a concrete slab that might give them some height.
Thanks again- I hate to try to kill them with anything toxic etc- just dont want them inside:)

Michelle, sealing up all of the possible entrances is the way to go to keep the rattlesnakes out of the house. I have some friends in West Texas who have had the same problem with rattlesnakes and also non-venomous snakes frequently getting in under poorly sealed doors. I believe that the snakes are attracted to the cooler temperatures inside of the house, and perhaps to mice that are able to enter the house the same way. Good Luck !
Best Regards JohnZ

I guess I should ask the obvious question - are you certain the snakes you've seen in your house are in fact rattlesnakes? Having lived in the Phoenix/Scottdale area for 15 years (now Tucson), I've responded to many "rattlesnake" removal calls. Only occasionally were rattlesnakes actually found - usually a Sonoran gopher snake, night snake, or a few other species, were found in suburban yards. I have to wonder...

Well-- the first one I wasn't sure-- until I took the pictures of it to work-- apparently a few guys knew a bit about them and said that was what they said it was..of course, there were no rattles, they are babieys, about as long as a pencil- I wish I had the pictures, but they are long gone. They are brown, with diamond shapes on their backs. The shape of the head was not round either... I am getting some quotes on the sealing. ( I had done some last night, but there will be more)
I suppose in the end, even it they arent rattlers, I still dont want them in the house.. I would have quite a mess to clean up with the cats getting a hold of one:)
Thanks again!
