Do formal training programs exist that lead to some sort of certification in the handling of venomous snakes? If not, then how do residents of Florida legally keep venomous snakes when I understand that 1000 documented hours are necessary to receive the permit required to keep venomous reptiles?

No, there aren't any certificate programs on venomous snake handling. The 1000 hours are just documented, a letter is sent in and the the Florida G&F dept. issues the "permit". It's not a license. (There is a difference legally in licensure, certification and a permit.)

I'm not trying to start trouble or be picky, but my Fl paperwork says venomous reptile license in bold print at the top but most do call it a permit...
To get my permit/license in Fl, I had to submit documentation of 1000 hours of experience(they say within the species being applied for) that was time that I spent with someone who was already licensed in Fl(we kept a timesheet sorta like punching a time clock) and I think it was two references from people having knowledge of your experience...its been a while so things might have changed... if the paperwork isnt perfect you get rejected..also I had to pass a on site inspection of the hot room/cages before I got any animals..its a pain in the butt but worth the effort, and it truely is good for the hobby itself to insure that you become somewhat qualified to own venomous reptiles. I have since moved to Pa and I still maintain my Fl license and renew it every year. Hope this helps...Hey does anyone know if Linda Harrison is still doing the inspections?
