Okay..time for a off the wall question. How many of you would want your now child to do hots when they get older? The reason I ask is I have a nine year old who has all kinds of herps and who knows all the species and rules of my hot room..but at the swap meet yesterday for the first time he asked when he could have his first venomous....I was kinda shocked, not so much by the fact that he asked but by my own reaction, my motherly instinct doesnt want him to do hots!!!!! I dont want him to be a statistic..can you believe that?!! I love our hot hobby and always thought I would want to pass it on to the kids but now I'm alittle reluctant..of course he's not ready for his first hot yet but it just surprised me how I felt...So what do ya think? Do you want your children to do venomous? Pretty scary thought...but I think in the end if he wants to do it then I have to support and teach all that i've learned and pass it on to him, I wonder if I can talk him into waiting until hes forty to start?lol...I also have 3 others that have a strong interest in herps, so I'll be facing this issue again. I always thought it would be great to work side by side with them on all aspects of herps, but now that its here... we have had hots for 14 years, so they have been around since before the kids and the whole time they have been growing up they have been around all forms of herps...let me hear your thoughts all you dads and moms...I think either 18 0r 21 for the first hot since he's had lots of experience with non venomous and will have about 8 more years under his belt by then...

in pa it could be deemed illegal if you allow a minor child to handle venomous snakes...
in fact, if you allowed such, and your child was bitten, I feel rather certain you would be charged with endangering the welfare of children...at least, and rightly so.
I'm fairly certain that most other states have statutes that would criminalize this type of behavior.

wait a min...my post wasnt asking if I should give him one now...that is out of the question..my question is how as a parent you would feel about yur son or daughter getting into venomous reptiles...WHEN THEY ARE OF LEGAL AGE 18-21...just to be clear my son is not getting one now....I said when he is 18-21...I wanted to know that, even though we handle hots, how we feel about our loved ones handleing them...

I trust that you wouldn't, but I'm sure it has crossed the minds of many well meaning keepers out there...
For those who have done it or are/would consider doing it...serious ramifications could follow...
kinda sad, but to speak to the actual topic, i don't think i would want my kid(s) to be involved in this hobby (firsthand).

Yes and No.
I brought home my first hot when I was 16. Was it legal? I am pretty sure that what my parents were worried about was not the legality of the issue but whether or not their seemingly irresponsible (by my father's standards) son was going to get himself bitten. I didn't. Now it is 27 years later and I am still going strong with grown kids of my own. My daughter emailed me last week about an as yet unidentified snake that she and another servicemember found while deployed. Am I worried about my daughter? You bet! But she is an adult and she did learn how to be responsibly cautious around unidentified snakes. I trust her judgement and pray for a safe outcome because I can't be with her to keep her safe myself. You can't stop worrying about your kids but at some time you have to trust that they learned something from you and that they really were listening all those years at your side.
Just my opinion.

IMO, my main responsibility is to those who don't really understand the importance of herps, especially hots...little kids are the only ones that want to listen sometimes ....i dont think you can set a definite age as to when they are ready cuz my 20 year old stepbrother and sister arent as ready as my 17month old little girl...she can actually identify them better...its a complete judgement call based on each kid...mine likes them now but until she "gets" them then she wont keep 'em...when she can answer the question of "why do you keep them if you cant handle them" then i feel like she's ready....if it's up to my wife...never...hehehe..im not the overprotective type though...she DEFINITELY is...

I have absolutely no objection to the possibility that one or more of our children *might* keep venomous snakes, when they are of an appropriate age. Why would I impose restrictions on young adults? Their Mother might kill them LOL..... but Dad will be beside them in their venomous endeavors.
I think asking (or demanding, as some seem to suggest) that our children do as we say and not as we do, indicates we haven't raised them right. If we've raised them to be responsible adults then we should welcome them as venomous keepers, eh?

P.S. Fine question, IMHO....

Yea, so far I agree with mostly all the comments, I'm sure that eventually my son will be keeping venomous(he's got the bug...know what I mean?). But if he were to get bit, god forbid, seriously or even fatally, the guilt could be tough to deal with...as a parent we want to protect our children from harm but at what cost? a sheltered life? always taking the safe route?
No, when the day comes I will do my best to guide him and teach him to respect these animals and thier potential, in all aspects.
My 93 year old great-grandmother had 16 kids, several have passed away, and she says that there is nothing worse in life than seeing your children go before you do....I can certainly understand....

Well I guess as a father I sort of hoped that my son would have the same love for these awesome creatures that I have. If he wanted to keep one I would want to instruct him in all the things I have learned over the years and then tell him that even all my teachings will never make for even one mistake. Like most of you I would much rather be the one who gets bitten but hopefully no one does. Personally I don't think he will get into them though. He has seen how much work is involved in this hobby and I don't think he feels the desire to be that involved. He has suprised me though when he sat with another person and explained each and every snake I have. I was in shock because I didn't think he ever paid any attention... LOL. In response if he did want to keep hots I would do all I could to support him and help him learn what I could teach him.
