Just 15 minutes ago, I was looking for snakes around my cabin in Cedar Mtn. SC. and saw a medium sized Timber go under a slab of lumber where a portable sawmill had been used. I carefully lifted the lumber, and the approx. 3 foot snake made a hasty retreat. At no time did it rattle. Is this common behavior?

Timbers very rarely rattle unless quite annoyed. As a matter of fact, surprisingly enough;most species hesitate to rattle unless sufficiently molested.

A rattlesnake that "sounds off" in the presence of man most often is killed for its efforts. A snake that does not rattle in the presence of Homo sapiens will more likely live to pass on those "quiet" genes.
