I purchased a WC Mangrove Snake in early June and was told that it was feeding on live mice. However, I have tried a live mouse, a f/t mouse, and two different sizes of live rats. Since that doesn't seem to be working I'm planning on trying to scent a mouse (probably f/t first since I have one in my freezer) with either a bird or lizard. Now I have two questions regarding this.
1.Can I scent the mouse with a WILD bird chick (I have a bird nest near my house that I could get a baby from) or will that spread disease/not have the same effect as a CB chick?
2. I've know most people use anoles to scent rodents with, which I can get at my local pet store if necessary, but I was wondering if I could use my bearded dragon to scent a mouse with.

Todd, I would try both. Think about it this way, you have a Mangrove Snake. What does it eat in the wild ???
Perhaps lizards from tree limbs, perhaps fish from the mangrove, ?????
Try senting all kinds of stuff. Try all kinds of foods.
Try frogs, and fish, and mice, and lizards, etc.
The snake did not get to the size it is without eating something...............
If Chad can get Cottonmouths to eat Chicken Gizzards, you can get a Mangrove Snake to eat something..........
You have to figgure out what that something is............

LOL getting a cottonmouth to eat chicken gizards is no great feat considering they are the only snake recorded eating road kill lol
Aside from that, John is right. Just try different food items. Mangroves can be switched over to rodeents eventualy. I had a gorgeous female a few years back that ate rats like they were going out of style. Just try lizards etc and get a few meals in the snake. then start trying to get it on rodents via scenting.

Jeremy, I have actually seen a 6 foot black ratsnake eating a severely emaciated (almost completed dried and caked) road killed squirrel off the road. It was quite a sight. I am sure scavenging is a common occurance with snakes but rarely observed.
One important bit of information regarding the mangrove in terms of why it may not be feeding is environmental. If the set up, temps, humidity levels, etc are not where they should be at, the snake will not feed no matter what. If the environment is suitable, you might try frozen/thawed quail. I have had great success using quail on stubborn feeders. We got our Lyre Snake to start feeding on day old quail and now pounds mice.

Thanks for the information everyone. I plan to have a friend pick me up a variety of different prey items at the Hamburg show this weekend so I guess I'll wait until I receive those and give everything a shot.

Cottonmouths are not the only snake that eats road-kill. I recently received a photograph of a Canadian garter snake swallowing a dead bird. Most snakes are opportunistic feeders.

Wow, those are some cool observations! I agree, snakes are very oppirtunistic. I know snakes will scvange. There is a pic of a C.atrox eating a dead bird in the Manny Rubio's book. I have also heard that some of the island populations of cottonmouths in Fl feed almost exclusivly on dead fish that fall from the nest of birds.
Regarding garter snakes, I have seen film of them eating spagetti! LOL so its not supriseing
Cottons were the only snakes I had ever heard of eating actualy road kill. A dead carcass is one thing. A road pizza is somthing else LOL
again, very neat observation of the ratsnake Rob! That must have been a cool sight.
Thanks for the information!
Regards,
jeremy
