I found a road-kill neonate in SC mountains. Can anybody help me id it. It had markings like a Timber but no button, also was speckled on underside.

I was able to id the specimen via Peterson field guide. It appears to be a juvenile N. Black Racer.

Having a good field guide can be a great thing.
Many juvenile snakes look very different from the adults.
The Petersons Field Guid is a good one, and a even better one is the "Snakes of North America: Eastern and Central Region" by Alan Tennant.
Best Regards JohnZ
