What are some tangible methods to protect snakes and reptiles and amphibians in general from man's destructive activities? ... they have few advocates.

If you are licensed to keep venomous snakes in your state, let the local sheriff's department & police departments know that you are willing to remove snakes any time they get a call. Most will probably turn out to be non-venomous, & most calls will occur while you are sleeping, but the snakes you remove from houses & yards will not be killed.
Do educational programs in schools, for scouting groups & for civic organizations at their meetings.

Perhaps the most important aspect of helping herps is saving habitat. That's really the most important thing when it comes to conservation of herps. BUT, in order to save habitat, people need to be educated, there need to be people willing to help rescue herps that have found backyards where folks don't share that same interest, there has be be an aggressive public awareness and marketing program, etc. We need to stay close to many other conservation groups (after all, when we save habitat for much cuter animals that have fur and four legs, we also save habitat for herps) and even groups such as Ducks Unlimited and other hunting organizations who raise millions of dollars in not only buying land, but managing it and protecting it. Fragmentation of habitat is one of the key items to the demise of many herps so people staying actively involved in local, state and federal government can have a positive impact on curtailing development.
