Could a Sea Snake live in a big fresh water tank?
Not that I have one or are planning to, just a question I had. Are they protected? And if not who has them so a person could get one if they wanted?

Shawn, it would be best to keep a Sea Snake in a Salt or Brackish Water Tank.
Sea Snakes have been designed by nature to live in a very salty enviornment. If you put them into fresh water, there will be factors like electrolytic balance, and osmosis of dissolved salts across cell membranes in the skin, and mouth lining and cloaca opening. More than likely, this will kill or sicken the Sea Snake.
I have kept 3 Sea Snakes in years past, as they occasionally come in with shipments of Ribbon Eels destined for the aquarium trade. I always kept them in Salt Water Aquariums. Most of the time they are not readilly available for sale in this country, and if they are, they will cost a lot. Also, keeping AntiVenom for them would be quite expensive, if it was available at all.
As far as the legality of ownership, that would probably depend on what State you reside in.
If a State allows you to keep Cobras, then Sea Snakes would probably be legal in that State.
Hope this helps.

Thanks John, I am fascinated with all reptiles, and I know for the most part I will never get the chance to have many in my collection, but questions can still be asked.

I'm not quite sure about the whole "if a state allows cobras (or other elapids), they allow sea snakes" comment. If I'm not mistaken, FL for example severely restricts or outright bans the private possession of Hydrophiinae.

That is why I said "probably." Every state will have different laws, and it would be up to the individual to check on those laws.
It would make sense that Florida would not want a snake that might become established in their oceans.
Several other states do lump Sea Snakes in with their laws concerning Cobras, Mambas, etc.
Best Regards JohnZ
