I was at the guy's house who I call my Mentor. I help clean his cages and I get lessons. well I was moving at a good clip and was in a hurry so I could go and have a beer. Now while I have not kept hot's I have been bitten so I knew what happend when I leaned over a work bench and felt a not painfull thump on my stomach. I knew I messed up. I looked down to see his copper head cocked to strike again. It did not. It missed me but not by a whole lot. Lesson learned ? PAY ATTENTION TO THE VENOMUS REPTILES !!! I am glad I did not get bit or that the little dude did not get a second chance at my fat gut. I dont think he would have missed.

"well I was moving at a good clip and was in a hurry so I could go and have a beer."
Yeah, if there's one thing in life you don't want to be rushing, it's working with venomous snakes... Besides, beer's bad for you too. :)

Once you do start keeping your own venomous snakes, remember that ALL work with them is to be done BEFORE the drinking starts. A good percentage of venomous snakebites in this country are preceded by the phrase:
"Hey, y'all..watch this".

When I was 10 I stomped on a copper heads head. I picked it up and it bit me on my hand between my thumb and forfinger. I am 33 now and I dont kill snakes any more. My fore finger and thumb still tingle and I dont have the range I used to have. It was again a Copper head(Agkistrodon contortrix contortrix). He was as pale as I was after words. I figure I would have been pretty misreable if I got hit in the gut.

Yeah that would suck taking it in the stomach.
I take it you didn't know the snake was there or were you working with him? Escaped snake? Just wondering what the situation was.

LOL. Actually, Greg, it's preceded by the phrase: "hold my beer and watch this".

Funny how a close call with a hot will do that. I remember the feeling I had when I almost got nipped by an eyelash viper....and the lesson learned from it...a 20 inch schlegelli can strike 18 inches. You need to learn from that mistake.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything about this "mentor". What kind of mentor of someone who is learning the ropes with venomous snakes would allow that person to move at a "fast clip" so they can go have a bear? Man, someone like that wouldn't have a chance working under me. A mentor doing things right would never allow someone working under their wing to rush while working with herps of any kind much less venomous. This is harsh but I just found this thread to be a little disturbing....guess I just take things too seriously.
