Man Arrested for Non--IndigenousVenomous Non-Indennous Snakes On Internet
Phenix City 10/10/07 (AP) -- A Phenix City man has
been arrested for allegedly selling highly venomous, non-indigenous snakes on the Internet.
Officers from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources arrested William Gornto, 47, after officers obtained a search warrant for
his residence, the agency said in a statement Tuesday. Tips from concerned citizens led to the arrest Oct. 3 and officers seized 35 Western Diamondback, 19 Prairie and three Black Tail rattlesnakes, the agency said.
The conservation department's regulations make it illegal to sell, offer for sale or possess venomous reptiles without a permit.
"If these non-indigenous, highly poisonous snakes had escaped and began to breed, it could pose a serious threat to native wildlife," said Allan Andress, law enforcement chief for the agency's wildlife division.
Andress also said those type of snakes pose a severe threat to people, especially in populated areas.
The snakes are now safely contained at an undisclosed location, conservation officials said. Gornto faces a maximum fine of $500 per count and six months in jail if convicted.
He did not immediately return a phone call to his home for comment.

MY COMMENTS: The DNR should be more factual in their comments. There is no possible way that those species would be able to "escape, breed, and pose a threat to native wildlife" in Alabama. Someone's been watching too many movies. Alabama is not Guam.

The "escaped and began to breed" thing seems to have originated with the news folks on the Burmese pythons in S. Florida, and is now creeping into many news- paper articles and what folks in public are starting to believe.
`tis unfortunate.

Yep, but they are not indiginous to Alabama, and "Phenix City" is in Alabama, and not in Arizona.
It is one of those way Southern red-neck cities, full of good old boys, tobacco farmers, peanut farmers, pit bull dogs, and rattlesnake roundups, and grits, LOL !

One of the best t-shirts I've ever seen was at a rest stop in Georgia, right before the South Carolina border. It said G.R.I.T.S.....Girls Raised In The South!
