I apologize in advance because this is not herp related but my wife asked me a very interesting question and I figured some you zoo folks or smart people might know if a raccoon could successfully breed with a Coatimundis??

I've never tried to breed them, but I'm going to have to say "no" based on biological priciples. Different genera (Procyon vs. Nasua and Nasuella)aren't generally capable of interbreeding. Plus their ranges overlap (From Mexico to Brazil). If they interbred readily there would be 'intergrades' throughout their range.
Of course there is always the occasional oddity. But even Liger (Lion + Tiger) are in the same Genus (Panthera)

They are from the same family, although they do not interbreed. And would not if put together....I would take pity on the poor raccoon!!!
I am hoping she is not thinking of getting one as a pet either. I have just finished raising one (actually she is still in the teen-stage) and they make horrific house animals. Just a friendly FYI.

Ah cool....no they don't. They pretty much live different lifestyles; coatis being more diurnal and roaming around in groups (at least the females). They are pretty protective of their own and not overly sociable- so intermingling with others does not rank high on their list. Granted they look similar in some ways and are of the same overall family (as are the kinkajous) but that's pretty much where the similarities end.
Groovy little animals though!
