Thanks for sharing....I haven't been to this show but now have a better feel what's going on. Looks like they get quite a crowd much like NARBC that I'm involved with (but NARBC does not allow venomous sales or sales of any threatened/endangered species). My only concerns with what I saw on the video include:
- a tank stuffed with baby gators w/out any land/heat/etc....my guess is that most of these will either become abandoned, or, given up as pets at some point. This isn't the place to sell baby gators and if you are going to sell them, at least show them properly.
- turtles - it's always bugged me by vendors stuffing plastic boxes full of baby turtles. I wonder about the rampant disease transmission in these types of conditions. Selling an alligator snapper in a dry tank seemed a bit cruel to me.
- general public touting around with their pets on their shoulders: first, its stressful for their pet but my bigger concern is whether these animals are harboring any disease (but then again, that could be said about any animal at the show).
- keeping high stress animals like rhino vipers in a deli cup on a table w/out any environmental controls.
I personally think that if folks are going to sell venomous herps in deli cups that they should be required to keep those deli cups in a hard, acrylic type of box that is kept locked....this is just a disaster waiting to happen. There's just something that doesn't seem quite right when you look down at a table of venomous herps in flimsy deli cups (some that weren't even taped) and see so much potentially lethal critters getting in the wrong hands.
Other than that, it was neat to see the Hamburg show from an angle that I haven't seen before.

That Alligator Snapper couldn't turn around in that tank but I want to believe the owner just put him in there just for the show.
The people with the reptiles around their neck or on their shoulders were vendors and behind tables.
The deli cups, I hate being sold a HOT snake in a deli cup. Just a pain sometimes to open and a snakes fangs inches away.

Nice Video!
The Hamburg show is fine the way it is! Thanks to the vendors and people attending. This show has been going on several times a year for many years. Hopefully it will go on for years to come without a bunch of BS rules and regulations.

Since I'm in pa and have attended every Hamburg show since forever ,I'm in a unique position to give feedback. This last show was not the crowd I'm use to.Five minutes after opening the line wasn't that long. The promoter ,Denise ,run's a tight ship and it was the best run show that I've seen in a while. Security was top notch . They have some growing pain's but she's doing a great job.

Pa as well and you are right about the show and the security. I was under the impression Marty was running it? I know nothing of the management or politics of the show so will not go there.

To be honest it felt like the same show as last month. Many of the same vendors were there and at the same tables. It was set up a tad different like more venomous and this time there was room to sit down and eat but it felt alot like the same show I was at last month IMO.

Scott, thanks for posting the Hamburg video. I have only attended that show one time, and spent 3 hours just trying to find a place to park and waiting in line to get in the door, LOL !
Al C. was nice enough to introduce me to several of the venomous vendors and SHHS site members, which was greatly appreciated.
I would love to attend that show again, but only as a vendor selling out of print reptile books and other dry goods. That way I would not have to deal with the sholder to sholder croud, or the parking issues, nd might get to see the animals before the venue opened to the public.
Some of the points that Rob makes are good ones that should be considered. I would like for all venomous snakes in deli cupps to be taped with RED colored tape at all shows, and clearly labled as to species and being venomous. That way, folks would start to learn venomous from non-venomous snakes.
I also like the idea of some sort of lexan cover or display box that the deli cupps are housed in.
And I agree that the overcrowding of many turtles, or alligators, or snakes in small aquariums should not be allowed. The vendors who display animals that way do not care very much for the health of the animals, but just in making money. It would be good if the folks putting on the shows would set up some rules concerning this, and how animals should be housed.
Overall, in most Reptile Shows I have attended, the great majority of the vendors do care about the health and welfare of the animals they bring to sell. Over time, we will hopefully be able to weed out those dealers who use unsafe practaces, or practaces that are stressfull to the animals.
Best Regards JohnZ

Interesting points John. What's funny is, almost to a T, the very rules you'd like to see put in the place are the ones TexasReptiles have, or at least had the last time I vended at one of their venomous shows. I had to have all my venomous snakes in taped delis, inside some kind of either deli display or some other container. To go even further, any spitting elapids had to be double contained and not have a direct line of sight from any vent holes to a person's eye. Granted this was in '04 and they may have changed their rules since then. Randal or someone who vends at his current SA show may chime in and let us all know.
I guess in my naivety I assumed all venomous shows had rules such as these. Apparently they don't, and that's a shame. True, the rules don't stop incapable keepers from buying snakes way over their experience levels, but at least it helps address the public safety issue and I think that's what Rob seems to be mainly concerned with. I'm a huge fan of reptile shows and really miss having a venomous show within easy driving distance, but at the same time I believe they must be better controlled or they're quite literally going to become a thing of the past for everyone. That'd be a real shame too. You tend to see some of the most colorful folks at the hot shows!
