NCARK needs financial help to make a deadline of November 27 later this month. We were very successful in defeating the move of the Animal Protection Institute (API) to pass SB1477 this year. API spent $250,000 on one of the best law firms in Raleigh to lobby their case. NCARK also hired a top firm to represent our interests. We did not have the budget to match the effort of API, but we put together an effective campaign that has cost us about $12,000. Ultimately we crushed API and sent them back to CA, but we stiil owe our law firm about $1,700. The legislative session ended back in the summer and the firm has worked with us and allowed us time to pay our bill. Their physical year ends at the end of November and they have asked that we pay our bill by the 27th so that they can close out their year. We need to raise $1,700 quickly.

Andrew,
By any chance will you be at the upcoming Atlanta show by the Georgia Herpetological Society?

Hey Andrew,
Have you ever considered having your organization on more of a national level....like "National Association of Reptile Keepers" instead of N.C.A.R.K? it's just a thought as some organizations like our's might be able to contribute if the primary focus was on a national level (even if its in name only). Your mission statement and supportive documents certainly allude to a national focus but the name and some of the wording is more indicative of a statewide association. It's just a thought. I can make a better argument to my higher ups if it wasn't specific to one state. Just a thought but we'll help out as best as we can.

Rob thanks for your response. Yes we have considered taking it national. We are currently getting a chapter started in SC. SCARK has been a reality for about 6 months or so. VA is our next expansion. If we are successfull in VA as well then we will take it national. The 'American Reptile Keepers' or ARK with chapters in any state that wants to utilize this highly effective model we have created. We will need to modify the mission to reflect the nature of a national organization such as ARK. It is also important to note that this is not a political organization per se. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare. We advocate standards for caging, care & husbandry, and health and safety protocols. Our political actions are all passive. We do not support or oppose political candidates. We advocate fair and responsible legislation. We educate the legislature to the realities of captive reptiles and represent keepers interests to them. The advantages of doing this at the national level would to have a central database that could be activated to create a strong grassroots lobby. And to raise funds at a national level that could be sent to states based on urgency of need. That is the ultimate goal.
