In upper-state SC, when do copperheads and Timbers come out of hibernation, and become active? April?

I was told at the recent Columbia expo that if you'll throw out a few pieces of tin now, that you can find them sometimes under the tin as early as February. After checking each piece of tin, don't check them again for 2-3 weeks. This is how they're finding the timbers and copperheads in SC.
