I'm trying to find some info on our Naja atra in terms of where exactly do they come from on the island of Formosa/Taiwan (habitat preference). There are heavy mountainous regions on the west side of the island and rolling plains on the east side and very little info about their habitat preference. I'm trying to update their exhibit sign and this one has me stumped.
Does anyone have some info that would be of help?
Many thanks,

I started a thread and trying to answer my question: there are populations in S.E. China which might lead me to believe that they would logically be found on the western side of Taiwan/Formosa where the mountainous regions are. But logic and nature are oftentimes worlds apart so if anyone has some good data/info I would greatly appreciate it.
So, that's all I have to work with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gee Whiz, Rob.
Could you give me a minute or two to find my copy of Venomous Snakes of Taiwan?
I'll see what I can find.

Okay, so it's actually "Snakes of Taiwan" published in 1963 by the United States Naval Medical Research Unit No. 2 at Taipei, Taiwan.
At that time, the snake was still considered to be Naja naja.
I am quoting text directly here:
"Naja naja occurs in many habitats ranging from fairly close associations with human habitations to agricultural lands and the low wooded or shrub areas, usually below 2,000 feet."
Not much but it is good historical data.
Hope it helps some.

Oops. Rereading your original request shows that maybe some more of this information will be useful to you.
Same source quoted above - different page:
"Records are incomplete but indications are that this snake may be found anywhere on the island at low altitudes. The Taiwan cobra apparently is more common in the west central and southern parts of Taiwan. A few specimens, however, have been captured at Yang Ming Shan and Peitou or other suburbs of Taipei. The same species occurs commonly on Hainan and in a number of the southeastern provinces of mainland China."
Hope this helps.

Rob, Clinical Toxinology Resources says:
"Adaptable to a wide range of terrain including grassland plains, jungle, open fields and even heavy populated regions."
The website SNAKES OF TAIWAN at:
http://www.twoton.com/photogallery/SnakesHikesKewetc/Snakes/Taiwan%20SnakesFINALhtm.htm
Says: "Habitats: Found throughout the lowland slopes along dry irrigated farmland, orchards and mixed shrub growth, it feeds during daytime, and thrives mainly on rodents and frogs."
Hope this helps.
