I have a female sidewinder last winter she feed all the time. When I first bought the sidewinder she had 3 rattles. This summer the sidewinder feed very heavy nailing a hopper every 10 days and she has become a fat sidewinder. In late September my sidewinder stopped eating. I have already taken the sidewinder to the vet and have treated the snake with metronidazole 6 doses. The medication failed to get the sidewinder to feed and the sidewinder is avoiding heat sources as well. I can only think that my sidewinder how with 5 rattles wants to hibernate.

I have been keeping and breeding C. cerastes for the last couple of years, and have come to the conclusion that most of them do start to "winter up" around september. They start to feed again around mid to late april. In the wild here in Arizona, we start seeing them in early june on a regular basis, and by the beginning of september, they are for the most part, gone for the winter.
