I live in Oklahoma and have several varieties of rattlers (Diamond-backed, Pygmy, Massasaugua, and Prairie) on some property I have leased. I have several dogs (pure bred german shephards) which I would like to exercise by letting them run in the country. There is a small mountain on the property, several swampy areas, several ponds, and much grassy range and I have seen the snakes mentioned above. Not wanting to have the dogs bitten, I have not allowed them to run here during the summer months, but really do not know when it would be safe for them. So:
1). When do these guys hibernate?
2). Is there a temperature where it can be guarenteed that they are denned up and not laying in the sun?
I understand, if a nice warm day comes along, they might be laying near the den entrance sunning themselves, but
3). at what point could I be relatively sure they are not out, or is there no such point?
Thanks in advance for any responses!
Walt

You should be safe now. Going to hit low 30s tonight. Certainly by Thanksgiving, and through until at least the end of February

Walter, when air temperatures are below 50 degrees F, it is usually safe that snakes will not be out.

I live just east of OKC and it's been pretty dead with the cold nights as said above. Even on a sunshiny day during the next few months you'd be pushing yourself to find a snake. Maybe on the rocks in the perfect situation but keep the dogs off the rocks and the problems fixed.
