Like i said on KS this happened right down the road from where I'm living with my parents and my boss and I have talked about it. They went by symptomology which couldn't have been easy. But yeah I'd like to do somethin to help. copperheads and corals are real prevalent here in this specific area especially. The neighborhood they live in isn't a completley developed area its got golf courses and ponds, ya know....the whole deal shelter, food, and water. the necessities for snakes in general. I've found more corals than copperheads here though, but this doesn't surpruise me. I just hope this doesn't hurt the animals image anymore than it already is.

Eric, I sent a donation to help the little girl`s medical expenses. Hopefully, others will do the same.
Like Chris Harper resently stated, the medical system in this country is out of control. There is no reason that a snake bite treatment should cost $90,000.00 !!!!
The crooks who run the FDA, Big Pharma, Insurance Businesses, Doctors, Politicians, and Hospitals are all to blame.
It is time for folks in this country to stand up and demand a change. The start would be to never elect a Senator, Legislator, Presedent, Governor, State Representitave, Mayor, or any other Politician for more than one term. That way we might break the big payoff chain, and actually have folks get elected who want to make a change.
Best Regards JohnZ

Not trying to make this into a political rant or anything (hah), but just for the sheer ridiculousness of seeing our system in action, I recommend watching the documentary Sicko. Even if you despise Michael Moore, the film puts the spotlight on how deplorable our medical system is here in the US. Yeah we have good doctors and lots of great technology, but we also let people die every day because they can't afford the treatments. A country as rich as this one has no excuse to let big pharm and insurance companies rape people like they do.

I'm going to send a little something that way. But I'm also going to hijack this forum for political purposes - someone else did it first ;)
Two words - tort reform.

I've also noticed in several bite accounts on here that the doctors insisted that what they were doing was best and it looked like they weren't being very open minded. I find that to be messed up. One saying that rattlesnake antivenin works for all snake bites..........i think it's time they put the egos aside and learned a bit more about envenomations.

Bioclon and Crofab when used right will work on pit vipers. The main question here is why surgery? it does not appear to have been needed and only increases the medical bill.

Well if you count the cuts used to relieve pressure surgery, in Peter Jenkins article that I'm sure most of us have read he said they had to do it for carpal tunel. I guess it would depend on the bite but I do see what you're saying. I think doctors jsut need to be more open minded whne it comes to bites or stings from any venomous animal.

Dr. Findley Russell, MD and I had a conversation about Fasciotomies. He said they were mostly a big money maker for the Hospitals and the surgeons, requiring months of skin grafts & wound treatments long after the bite has healed. Besides, who (what doctor)in their right mind cuts into a patient with severe coagulation issues and declining renal function. It's really asking for severe complications, far above the danger of the bite itself. They put $$ before their oath: "First, do no harm" goes right out the window.
What to do:
1)Just simply tell them, "You will own them and the hospital if they do a Fasciotomy" Have them put that in your medical chart.
2)Have a copy of Dr. Richard Dart's (Director, Rocky Mountain PCC) medical publication on why Fasciotomies should not be done. Keep this with you emergency snakebite protocol book.(I have this is you want a copy)
3) Have someone who you trust and knows about snakebite treatment to be your advocate and advisor to your spouse/partner, if you cannot act in your own behalf. They should use your emergency book contact list to locate other resources and personel that can consult with the local physicians. Don't trust the local doctors with your life. I've seen too many local ER staff say they have A/V in stock for non-native snakebite treatment..hahahaha, yeah right! I usually politely tell them "pissing" on the bite will be about as effective as the wrong A/V and at least won't hurt the patient. No, I don't mince words when somebody's life is at risk. You have to take charge or you will pay the price, just read the Peter Jenkins story.
Cheers!
Al
