Can a snake shed its skin whenever it wants? Or is it like getting a tooth and whenever it happens it happens? I know they shed there skins to grow of course.

A snake doesn't plan to shed it's skin. Its just a natural reaction that occurs in relation to diet and growth, humidity, temperatures etc. If there's plenty of food and the weather is optimal, a snake in the wild may shed 5 or 6 times in a year. If the snake is a large adult specimen in captivity and isn't doing much growing, it may only shed 1 or 2 times in a year.
